After the season I'm going to take a look back at how trades from last season panned out this season for the respective teams. One that catches my eye is the Melky Cabrera for Jonathan Sanchez and Ryan Verdugo trade. Right now the Giants have won that trade hands down. The Royals gambled incorrectly that last season was more fluke than breakout and Melky is now tearing the cover off the ball with the Giants. This season he is hitting .360/.407/.512 with 2 HR, 17 RBI, 25 R and 6 SB in 42 games. Also factored in the Melky decision was that his departure would open the way for Lorenzo Cain. Unfortunately Cain has been on the DL most of the year.
With Sanchez the Royals gamble that they would get the pitcher that shined in 2010 rather than the sub par performer from all his other seasons. Very similar to the Jeff Francis gamble the year before. Although he has spent part of this season on the DL he has been less than stellar other wise going 1-2 with a 6.75 ERA, 18 K, 1.85 WHIP in 25.1 IP over 6 games.
Maybe long term they can recoup some with Verdugo who is currently with Triple A Omaha. This season he is 3-0 with a 3.22 ERA, 38 K, 1.14 WHIP in 44.2 IP over 8 games. Those numbers show promise to a Royals team desperate for pitching.
I'll revisit this trade and others after the season. It should be interesting.
