Derek Norris traded to Nationals

Derek Norris was traded by the San Diego Padres to the Washington Nationals on December 2, 2016. The Padres in exchange received Pedro Avila. 

Norris is a catcher who hit .186/.225/.328 with 14 HR, 42 RBI, 50 R, 9 SB in 125 games with the Padres in 2016. Over five MLB seasons with the Padres and Athletics he hit .233/.309/.380 with 54 HR, 223 RBI, 221 R, 25 SB in 557 games. His MLB caught stealing rate is 26%. He was originally drafted by the Nationals in the fourth round in 2007, was traded to the Athletics in 2011 and was traded to the Padres in 2014. Norris will be 27 on February 14.

RHP Avila was 7-7, 3.48 ERA, 92 K, 1.33 WHIP, .249 BAA in 93.0 IP over 20 games at Class A Hagerstown in 2016. He originally signed with the Nationals in 2014 as an amateur free agent out of Venezuela. Avila will be 20 on January 14.
