Here is my 15th and final installment of College Spotlight for 2014. This week I am looking at A.J. Reed of Kentucky and Thomas Eshelman of Cal St Fullerton.
Reed is a junior 1B\LHP out of Terre Haute South High School in Terre Haute, IN. Heading into regional play is is the national leader in home runs and slugging percentage. This season he has hit .351/.491/.768 with 23 HR, 70 RBI, 59 R, 0 SB in 58 games. He was also impressive on the mound as he was 11-2, 2.10 ERA, 68 K, 1.15 WHIP in 103.0 IP over 15 games. Last year in his sophomore season he hit .280/.378/.519 with 13 HR, 52 RBI, 30 R, 1 SB in 55 games. On the mound he was 2-8, 4.04 ERA, 52 K, 1.40 WHIP in 82.1 IP over 14 games. The Wildcats continue their season Friday as the number two seed in the Louisville regional with a game against Kansas.
Eshelman is a sophomore RHP out of Carlsbad High School in Carlsbad, CA. He leds the nation in K/BB ratio with 13.43 which he achieved by fanning 94 and only walking a mere 7. Normally I would pair the HR leader with the strikeout leader but I already featured Zac Curtis of Middle Tennessee earlier this year. For the season he is 8-3, 1.92 ERA, 94 K, 0.85 WHIP in 117.1 IP over 15 games. He also had 5 compete games this season. Last season as a freshman he was 12-3, 1.48 ERA, 83 K, 0.77 WHIP in 115.2 IP over 17 games. He also only allowed a ridiculous 3 walks and had two complete games. The Titans will play in the Stillwater regional on Friday as the number three seed with a game against Nebraska.
