Two Major One Minor 051314

Here is my sixth Two Major One Minor segment of 2014. This is my fourth year of doing this series where I feature two Major League players and one minor league player each week. This week I am featuring Mark Buehrle, Dan Haren and Mike Fiers.

LHP Buehrle is off to a stellar start to have a career year. He is the MLB leader in wins and leads the AL in ERA currently as he is 7-1, 2.04 ERA, 31 K, 1.24 WHIP in 53.0 IP over 8 games. His career best for wins was 19 in 2002 and if Buehrle could maintain the pace he could best that by 10. He has always been a work horse reaching the 200 inning mark in every season going back to 2001. He was originally drafted by the White Sox in the 38th round in 1998. After turning 35 on March 23 he is showing no signs of wearing out any time soon.

RHP Haren is doing well in his first season with the Dodgers after a well traveled 12 seasons. This year he is 5-1, 2.84 ERA, 38 K, 1.18 WHIP in 50.2 IP over 8 games. He was also a big innings eater 2005 through 2011 going well above the 200 mark in each. Then back, hip and shoulder injuries knocked those numbers down with DL trips the next two seasons. The trick will be to stay healthy over the grind of the season in which he will turn 34 on September 17. Haren was originally drafted by the Cardinals in the second round in 2001.

RHP Fiers is another older player looking for a return to the Majors after stints with the Brewers 2011 to 2013. Thsi season at Triple A Nashville he is dominating at 6-1, 1.59 ERA, 64 K, 0.79 WHIP in 45.1 IP over 7 games. He did show the ability to miss Major League bats in 2012 as he had 135 K's in 127.2 IP. Then he had the misfortune in 2013 while pitching for Nashville to get hit by a line drive which broke his right forearm. He appears to be overcoming that and should get another shot with the Brewers. He was originally drafted by the Brewers in the 22nd round in 2009. Fiers will be 29 on June 15.
