Here is my week 12 installment of College Spotlight for 2014. This week I am looking at Chance Gusbeth of Cal State Bakersfield and Carson Baranik of Louisiana Lafayette.
Gusbeth is a sophomore OF\RHP out of Desert Christian High School in Lancaster, CA. On Saturday he had an explosive day at the plate going 4 for 6 with a double, two 3-run home runs, 7 RBI and 3 runs to led the Roadrunners to a 19-7 win at Northern Colorado. This season he is hitting .294/.351/.429 with 3 HR, 35 RBI, 23 R, 1 SB in 47 games. During his freshman season last year he hit .244/.326/.308 with 0 HR, 21 RBI, 26 R, 0 SB in 48 games and as a pitcher he was 0-2, 15.00 ERA, 1 K, 3.33 WHIP in 3.0 IP over 2 games. The school started playing Division I baseball in 2009 and in currently in the WAC.
Baranik is a junior RHP out of Parkway High School in Bossier City, LA. On Saturday he pitched a two hit complete game shut out to lead the Ragin Cajuns to a 7-0 victory at Arkansas State. His line for the game was 9.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 K in 84 pitches. For the season he is 9-1, 3.03 ERA, 59 K, 1.03 WHIP in 80.1 IP over 12 games. He pitched in 2013 at Miami Dade College where he was 6-2, 2.83 ERA, 59 K in 63.2 IP over 13 games. He was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 41st round in 2011 but signed with LSU only to stay there one season.
