Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers was named the 2012 American League Most Valuable Player by the Baseball Writers Association of America. He garnered 22 first place votes and 362 points total. Mike Trout of the Angels was second with six first place votes and 281 points total. Also getting triple digit points were Adrian Beltre of the Rangers with 210 points, Robinson Cano of the Yankees with 149, Josh Hamilton of the Rangers with 127 and Adam Jones of the Orioles with 124. Others who received votes were Derek Jeter of the Yankees with 73 points, Justin Verlander of the Tigers with 58, Prince Fielder of the Tigers with 56, Yoenis Cespedes of the Athletics with 41, Edwin Encarnacion of the Blue Jays with 33, David Price of the Rays with 26, Fernando Rodney of the Rays with 24, Jim Johnson of the Orioles with 22, Alex Rios of the White Sox with 17, Josh Reddick with the Athletics with 14, Albert Pujols of the Angels with 8, Ben Zobrist of the Rays with 7, Joe Mauer of the Twins with 6, Rafael Soriano of the Yankees with 5, Matt Wieters of the Orioles with 4, Felix Hernandez of the Mariners with 2, Jered Weaver of the Angels with 2 and Raul Ibanez of the Yankees with 1.
In 2012 the third baseman hit .330/.393/.606 with 44 HR, 139 RBI, 109 R, 4 SB in 161 games. For his MLB career he has hit .318/.395/.561 with 321 HR, 1123 RBI, 961 R, 33 SB in 1512 games. He originally signed with the Marlins as an amateur free agent in 1999 out of Venezuela. Cabrera turned 29 on April 18.
