Paul Maholm was traded by the Chicago Cubs to the Atlanta Braves on July 30, 2012 along with Reed Johnson and cash. In exchange the Cubs received Arodys Vizcaino and Jaye Chapman.
LHP Maholm is in his eighth MLB season pitching with the Cubs and Pirates. In 2012 he was 9-6 with a 3.74 ERA, 81 K, 1.24 WHIP in 120.1 IP over 21 games with Chicago. For his MLB career he is 62-79 with a 4.30 ERA, 786 K, 1.41 WHIP in 1264.0 IP over 206 games. He was originally drafted by the Pirates with the eighth pick of the first round in 2003. Maholm turned 30 on June 25.
Johnson is an outfielder in his 10th MLB season playing with the Cubs, Dodgers and Blue Jays. In 2012 he was hitting .302/.355/.444 with 3 HR, 16 RBI, 23 R, 2 SB in 76 games with Chicago. For his MLB career he has hit .284/.341/.414 with 62 HR, 365 RBI, 474 R, 41 SB in 1073 games. He was originally drafted by the Blue Jays in the 17th round in 1999. Johnson will be 36 on December 8th.
RHP Vizcaino has not pitched in 2012 after under going Tommy John surgery in March. In 2011 he rose through the minors at Class A Advanced Lynchburg, Double A Mississippi and Triple A Gwinnett before ending the season with Atlanta. He was 2-2 with a 2.45 ERA, 37 K, 1.02 WHIP in 40.1 IP over 9 games with Lynchburg, was 2-3 with a 3.81 ERA, 55 K, 1.25 WHIP in 49.2 IP over 11 games with Mississippi, was 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA, 8 K, 1.00 WHIP in 7.0 IP over 6 games with Gwinnett and was 1-1 with a 4.67 ERA, 17 K, 1.44 WHIP in 17.1 IP over 17 games with Atlanta. He originally signed with the Yankees as an amateur free agent in 2007 out of the Dominican Republic. Vizcaino will be 22 on November 13.
RHP Chapman was pitching for the Braves Triple A team in Gwinnett. He was 3-6 with a 3.52 ERA, 60 K, 1.40 WHIP, 7 SV in 53.2 IP over 40 games with Gwinnett. He was originally drafted by the Braves in the 16th round in 2005. Chapman turned 25 on May 22.
