I've seen some crazy box scores from the Pacific Coast League this season but few have rivaled the Omaha Storm Chasers 20-3 victory over the Tuscon Padres in Tuscon on August 12. I have referred to the Pacific Coast league as a batting practice league but this box score rivaled some from Sunday night softball. Up and down the order Storm Chasers had multiple hits: Will Myers 5-7, Clint Robinson 5-7, Jason Bourgeois 4-6, Christian Colon 4-5, Irving Falu 4-7, Johnny Giavotella 4-7, David Lough 3-5, Mitch Maier 2-5 and Max Ramirez 2-4. Cather Max Ramirez might have added to his totals but he was spelled by Adam Moore on the 101 degree day. Moore was the only Storm Chaser to go hitless.
Omaha pitcher Doug Davis did a good job keeping Tuscon in check with a line of 6.0 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 K in 76 pitches. Blaine Hardy, Roman Colon and Vin Mazzaro shut the Padres down the last three innings. The lines of the first three Tuscon pitchers were as horrific as you'd expect after looking at what Omaha did. Starter Colt Hynes had the line 1.2 IP, 9 H, 8 R, 5 ER, 0 BB, 0 K in 47 pitches. Alexis Lara had 1.0 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 0 K in 30 pitches. Chris Franklin had 1.1 IP, 10 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 0 BB, 1 K in 45 pitches. Josh Spence, Nick Vincent and Sawyer Carroll spread ten hits and 3 ER over the last four innings.
While Hynes did give up one home run and Franklin gave up two the ball surprising staying in the park on the hot day. After a day like this pitchers need short memories or the nightmares will begin.
