Felix Hernandez of the Seattle Mariners pitched a perfect game in a 1-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on August 15. His line for the game was 9.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 12 K in 113 pitches. For 2012 he is now 11-5 with a 2.60 ERA, 174 K, 1.04 WHIP in 180.0 IP over 25 games. For his MLB career he is now 96-72 with a 3.17 ERA, 1438 K, 1.20 WHIP in 1568.1 IP over 230 games. He originally signed with the Mariners as an amateur free agent in 2002 out of Venezuela. Hernandez turned 26 on April 8th.
It was the first perfect game in Mariners history and the 23rd in MLB history. The game was the 43rd with a 1-0 score out of the 278 no hitters in MLB history. It was the fourth time the Rays have endured a no hitter since the beginning of the 2009 season while no other team has had it happen more than once. That is unusual since the Rays are many years removed from doormat status and have played above .500 ball each of those years.
