Billy Hamilton of the Pensacola Blue Wahoos broke the minor league steals record on August 21, 2012. He entered the day three shy of breaking the record with 14 games remaining. Two games were scheduled against the Montgomery Biscuits but he only needed the first game to make history as he blazed the base paths collecting four more steals. He got on base three times with a hit and two walks which allowed him the opportunity to steal second twice and third twice. The record was his at 147 steals surpassing the mark of 145 set by Vince Coleman in 1983. Pensacola lost the game 4-2.
Hamilton is a shortstop from Taylorsville, Mississppi who was originally drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the second round in 2009. He started 2012 with the Reds Class A Advanced team in Bakersfield where he hit .323/.413/.439 with 1 HR, 30 RBI, 79 R, 104 SB in 82 games. After his promotion to Pensacola he has hit .306/.427/.425 with 1 HR, 14 RBI, 26 R, 43 SB in 38 games. Hamilton will be 22 on September 9th.
