Here is my week five installment of College Spotlight for 2012. This week I am looking at Sean Bignall of University of Arkansas-Little Rock and Corey Littrell of Kentucky.
Senior outfielder Sean Bignall of UALR entered last week among the national leaders in home runs, RBI, doubles, runs, hits, total bases, slugging percentage and on base percentage. Then he endured a one for 19 slump over a five game stretch over the week. Even after that hit to his stats he is still hitting an impressive .375/.469/.850 with nine home runs, 35 RBI, 24 runs and four steals in 21 games. That is a great improvement over his junior season when he hit .244/.372/.346 with two home runs, 15 RBI, 32 runs and 11 steals in 58 games. I hope he can halt his current slide and return to early season form rather than fall to numbers that resemble his previous year.
Sophomore LHP Corey Litrell of Kentucky is positioned as the third starter on the staff bu he is currently putting up the best numbers. This season he is 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA, 31 strikeouts and 1.17 WHIP in 29.1 innings over five games. That builds on his Freshman season when he was 6-6 with a 6.95 ERA, 51 strikeouts and 1.74 WHIP in 68.2 innings over 16 games. The rest of the Kentucky starters Jerad Grundy, Taylor Rogers, A.J. Reed and Chandler Shepherd also deserve kudos for helping Kentucky to a 21-0 start and their sweep of second ranked and defending national champion South Carolina over the weekend.
