College Spotlight 030512

Here is my week three installment of College Spotlight for 2012. This week I am looking at Mason Katz of LSU and Brett Mooneyham of Stanford.

Junior First baseman Mason Katz of Louisiana State followed up a strong game against McNeese State with a good series against Dartmouth and had three home runs over a three game stretch. For the season he hit hitting .500/.596/.950 with three home runs, 14 RBI, 18 runs and one steal in 12 games. As a sophomore in 2011 he hit .337/.371/.532 with four home runs, 53 RBI, 40 runs and 6 steals in 51 games. LSU is a traditional baseball power that has gotten off to a good 10-2 start with 11 of 12 games at home to start the season.

Junior LHP Brett Mooneyham of Stanford had an impressive seven innings against Fresno State holding them scoreless while striking out 13 and only allowing two hits and two walks. It was his third stellar outing against a traditional power as he also has victories against Vanderbilt and Texas to run his record to 3-0 with a 1.71 ERA, 28 strikeouts and 0.90 WHIP in 21 innings. He is certainly keeping pace with staff ace Mark Appel and should help top ranked Stanford stay on the fast track to the College World Series.
