College Spotlight 031212

Here is my week four installment of College Spotlight for 2012. This week I am looking at Jay Gonzalez of Auburn and Michael Wacha of Texas A&M.

Sophomore outfielder Jay Gonzalez of Auburn is among the national leaders in drawing walks, steals and runs. This season he is hitting .324/.434/.471 with zero home runs, 13 RBI, 20 runs, 14 walks and 14 steals in 17 games. This is certainly a breakout year over his Freshman season when he hit .174/.310/.171 with zero home runs, two RBI, nine runs, seven walks and one steal in 34 games. Now he is hitting lead off and setting the table for team mates Creede Simpson, Ryan Tella and Cullen Wacker as they've pin balled their way out to a 10-7 start.

Junior RHP Michael Wacha of Texas A&M pitched well over six innings last Friday to earn the victory over Cal State Fullerton. He struck out eight while allowing two hit and one walk against 24 batters but a high pitch count of 107 contributed to his early departure. For the season he is 3-0 with a 0.70 ERA, 34 strikeouts and 0.71 WHIP in 25.2 innings over four games. He is building on a respectable sophomore season when he was 9-4 with a 2.29 ERA, 123 strikeouts and 1.14 WHIP in 129.2 innings over 19 games. He is complimented nicely by fellow staff ace Ross Stripling as they have helped Texas A&M to a 13-3 start.
