2016 Rule 5 Draft Triple A Phase Round 2

After the Major League phase of the Rule 5 draft there is also a minor league draft. One part is the Triple A phase where teams have the option to draft players from Double A level teams or lower to play for their Triple A teams. The cost is $12,000 for each player

Here are the Round two selections for 2016

The Tampa Bay Rays selected RHP Jairo Munoz from the Philadelphia Phillies. He split 2016 between Rookie Gulf Coast and Class A Advanced Clearwater. The RHP was 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 2 K, 1.00 WHIP, .250 BAA in 1.0 IP in 1 game at Gulf Coast and 0-1, 1.13 ERA, 7 K, 1.38 WHIP, .222 BAA in 8.0 IP over 6 games at Clearwater.  He originally signed with the Royals as an amateur free agent in 2011. Munoz turned 25 on August 12.

The Arizona Diamondbacks selected RHP Grant Sides from the Cleveland Indians. He was 2-1, 3.36 ERA, 69 K, 1.10 WHIP, .190 BAA, 3 SV in 61.2 IP over 42 games at Double A Akron in 2016.  He was originally drafted by the Indians in the 12th round in 2011. Sides turned 27 on June 22.

The Milwaukee Brewers selected RHP Matt Ramsey from the Miami Marlins. He split 2016 between Rookie Gulf Coast, Class A Advanced Jupiter and Double A Jacksonville. The RHP was 0-0, 3.00 ERA, 9 K, 0.67 WHIP, .150 BAA in 6.0 IP over 5 games at Gulf Coast, 1-1, 1.17 ERA, 8 K, 0.91 WHIP, .154 BAA, 1 SV in 7.2 IP over 5 games at Jupiter and 0-0, 2.00 ERA, 12 K, 1.44 WHIP, .250 BAA in 9.0 IP over 6 games at Jacksonville. He was originally drafted by the Rays in the 19th round in 2011 and was traded to the Marlins in 2014. Ramsey turned 27 on September 24.

The Los Angeles Angels selected LHP Adrian Almeida from the New York Mets. He split 2016 between Rookie Kingsport and Short Season A Brooklyn. The LHP was 0-3, 6.14 ERA, 29 K, 1.55 WHIP, .247 BAA, 2 SV in 22.0 IP over 18 games at Kingsport and 0-1, 3.86 ERA, 5 K, 2.57 WHIP, .273 BAA in 2.1 IP over 3 games at Brooklyn.  He originally signed with the Mets in 2012 as an amateur free agent out of Venezuela. Almeida will be 22 on February 25.

The Miami Marlins selected LHP Nick Maronde from the Cleveland Indians. He split 2016 between Akron and Triple A Columbus. The LHP was 0-1, 2.19 ERA, 23 K, 1.09 WHIP, .253 BAA, 4 SV in 24.2 IP over 21 games at Akron and 0-0, 4.24 ERA, 16 K, 1.54 WHIP, .278 BAA, 1 SV in 23.1 IP over 17 games with 2 GS at Columbus.  He was originally drafted by the Angels in the third round in 2011 and was traded to the Indians in 2014. Maronde turned 27 on September 5th.

The Houston Astros selected RHP Jared Mortensen from the Tampa Bay Rays. He was 7-7, 5.23 ERA, 86 K, 1.52 WHIP, .209 BAA in 72.1 IP over 34 games with 4 GS at Double A Montgomery in 2016.  He originally signed with the Rays in 2013 after pitching in the Independent Leagues. Mortensen turned 28 on June 1st.

The New York Yankees selected RHP Colten Brewer from the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was 3-7, 4.09 ERA, 66 K, 1.55 WHIP, .285 BAA, 2 SV in 70.1 IP over 18 games with 13 GS at Class A Advanced Bradenton in 2016.  He was originally drafted by the Pirates in the fourth round in 2011. Brewer turned 24 on October 29.

The Seattle Mariners selected outfielder Chuck Taylor from the Arizona Diamondbacks. He split 2016 between Class A Advanced Visalia and Double A Mobile. The outfielder hit .273/.377/.416 with 3 HR, 19 RBI, 27 R, 1 SB in 42 games at Visalia and .238/.309/.345 with 1 HR, 11 RBI, 11 R, 1 SB in 41 games at Mobile.  He was originally drafted by the Diamondbacks in the fourth round in 2012. Taylor turned 23 on September 21.

The Detroit Tigers selected outfielder Elvis Rubio from the Milwaukee Brewers. He split 2016 between Class A Wisconsin and Class A Advanced Brevard County. The outfielder hit .17 for 64, .266/.288/.328 with 1 HR, 8 RBI, 10 R, 2 SB in 17 games at Wisconsin and .216/.268/.293 with 6 HR, 38 RBI, 29 R, 6 SB in 108 games at Brevard County.  He originally signed with the Brewers in 2011 as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic. Rubio turned 22 on July 2nd.

The Baltimore Orioles selected LHP Brian Moran from the Atlanta Braves. He was 0-0, 5.06 ERA, 1 K, 1.13 WHIP, .300 BAA in 5.1 IP over 6 games at Triple A Gwinnett.  He was originally drafted by the Mariners in the seventh round in 2009. Moran turned 28 on September 30.

The Los Angeles Dodgers selected RHP Kyle Grana from the St Louis Cardinals. He was 5-1, 3.12 ERA, 63 K, 1.27 WHIP, .203 BAA, 6 SV in 52.0 IP over 43 games at Class A Advanced Palm Beach in 2016.  He originally signed with the Cardinals as a non-drafted free agent in 2013. Grana turned 25 on April 26.

The Boston Red Sox selected LHP Joshua Smith from the Pittsburgh Pirates. He split 2016 between Double A Altoona and Triple A Indianapolis. The LHP was 2-2, 6.44 ERA, 61 K, 1.59 WHIP, .284 BAA, 2 SV in 57.1 IP over 42 games at Altoona and 0-2, 7.36 ERA, 7 K, 2.32 WHIP, .394 BAA in 7.1 IP over 7 games at Indianapolis. He was originally drafted by the Pirates in the 25th round in 2012. Smith turned 27 on October 11.

The Texas Rangers selected RHP Zack Bird from the Atlanta Braves. He was 3-3, 8.87 ERA, 34 K, 2.12 ERA, .320 BAA in 47.2 IP over 28 games with 2 GS at Class A Advanced Carolina in 2016.  He  was originally drafted by the Dodgers in the ninth round in 2012 and was traded to the Braves in 2015. Bird turned 22 on July 14.
