Joe Smith was traded by the Los Angeles Angels to the Chicago Cubs on August 1, 2016. The Angels in exchange received Jesus Castillo.
RHP Smith had split 2016 between Class A Advanced Inland Empire while rehabbing and the Angels. He was 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 2 K, 0.00 WHIP, .000 BAA in 2.0 IP over 2 games at Inland Empire and 1-4, 3.82 ERA, 25 K, 1.30 WHIP, .257 BAA, 6 SV in 37.2 IP over 38 games with the Angels. Over 10 MLB seasons with the Angels, Indians and Mets he was 40-27, 2.94 ERA, 461 K, 1.20 WHIP, .226 BAA, 29 SV in 556.1 IP over 623 games. He was originally drafted by the Mets in the third round in 2006. Smith turned 32 on March 22.
RHP Castillo was 2-3, 3.27 ERA, 38 K, 1.18 WHIP, .224 BAA in 33.0 IP over 7 games at Class A Eugene in 2016. He originally signed with the Diamondbacks in 2011 as an amateur free agent out of Venezuela and was traded to the Cubs in 2013. Castillo will be 21 on August 27.
