Chasing 50-50 2014 Final
This was the third year of my Chasing 50-50 segment. It started two seasons ago as we followed Matt Kemp of the Dodgers in his self proclaimed attempt to hit 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases. The 2014 season is under way and we are going to follow Kemp's efforts to see if he can make another run. As long as he is playing Kemp will always be part of this. I'm also keeping Mike Trout of the Angels and Carlos Gonzalez of the Rockies in the mix because I think they also have the speed\power combo capable of reaching the mark some day. Others will be added throughout the season as their production warrants. As of May 1st I am adding Gonzalez's Rockies teammate Charlie Blackmon, Brewers teammates Carlos Gomez and Ryan Braun and Brian Dozier of the Twins. As of July 3rd I am adding Todd Frazier of the Reds, Andrew McCutchen of the Pirates and George Springer of the Astros. Two whose season efforts warrant inclusion are teammates Ian Desmond and Anthony Rendon of the Nationals. Here are their final numbers for the 2014 season.
Matt Kemp
He started to show his pre-injury form after the All-Star break. He finished hitting .287/.346/.506 with 25 HR, 89 RBI, 77 R, 8 SB in 150 games.
Mike Trout
He ended up claiming his first MVP after finished second to Miguel Cabrera the previous two seasons. His MVP numbers were .287/.377/.561 with 36 HR, 111 RBI, 115 R, 16 SB in 157 games.
Carlos Gonzalez
He spent much of the later part of the season on the DL to hamper his efforts. He hit .238/.292/.431 with 11 HR, 38 RBI, 35 R, 3 SB in 70 games.
Charlie Blackmon
He cooled off from his torrid start but still almost entered the 20/20 club. He hit .288/.335/.440 with 19 HR, 72 RBI, 82 R, 28 SB in 154 games.
Carlos Gomez
He did have a break out season and did join the 20/20 club. He hit .284/.356/.477 with 23 HR, 73 RBI, 95 R, 34 SB in 148 games.
Ryan Braun
The tarnished former MVP started off hot but fell out of rhythm in the second half. He ended up hitting .266/.324/.453 with 19 HR, 81 RBI, 68 R, 11 SB in 135 games.
Brian Dozier
He put up most his power number in the first half but finished with enough to join the 20/20 club. He hit .242/.345/.416 with 23 HR, 71 RBI, 112 R, 21 SB in 156 games.
Todd Frazier
He was another that cooled off in the second half but still joined the 20/20 club. He hit .273/.336/.459 with 29 HR, 80 RBI, 88 R, 20 SB in 157 games.
Andrew McCutchen
His numbers fell off slightly from his MVP season last year as time on the DL kept him from having another year in the 20/20 club. He hit .314/.410/.542 with 25 HR, 83 RBI, 89 R, 18 SB in 146 games.
George Springer
He spent the second half of the season on the DL after putting up impressive numbers as a rookie. He hit .231/.336/.468 with 20 HR, 51 RBI, 45 R, 5 SB in 78 games.
Ian Desmond
He made the list in the 2013 final as well as he proves to be a regular in the 20/20 club. This season he hit .255/.313/.430 with 24 HR, 91 RBI, 73 R, 24 SB in 154 games.
Anthony Rendon
His sophomore campaign was a study in consistency as he put up similar number pre and post All Star break. This season he hit .287/.351/.473 with 21 HR, 83 RBI, 111 R, 17 SB in 153 games.

Ghost of 62 2014 final
The reference in the title is the 1962 Mets who are regarded as the worst of the Modern Era for all teams after 1900. The team finished 40-120 and 60.5 games back. For the season the team hit .240/.318/.361 and scored 617 runs which was 3.8 per game. The team ERA was 5.04 and they gave up 948 runs or 5.9 per game.
This was the second year of this series where each week I checked in on the MLB teams with the worst win-loss records and how they measured up to 1962. For the most part the worst of 2014 didn't sink to the depths some of the teams did in 2013. Here is how the final cellar dwellers of 2014 finished.
AL East: Boston Red Sox
Finished at 71-91 and were 25.0 games back. The team hit .244/.316/.369 and scored 634 runs which was 3.9 per game. Thei team ERA was 4.01 and they gave up 715 runs or 4.4 per game.
AL Central: Minnesota Twins
Finished at 70-92 and were 18.0 games back. The team hit .254/.324/.389 and scored 715 runs or 4.4 per game. Their team ERA was 4.57 and they gave up 777 runs or 4.8 per game.
AL West: Texas Rangers
Finished at 67-95 and were 31.0 games back. The team hit .256/.314/.375 and scored 637 runs or 3.9 per game. Their team ERA was 4.49 and they gave up 773 runs or 4.8 per game.
NL East: Philadelphia Phillies
Finished at 73-89 and were 23.0 games back. The team hit .242/.302/.363 and scored 619 runs or 3.8 per game. Their team ERA was 3.79 and they gave up 687 runs or 4.2 per game.
NL Central: Chicago Cubs

NL West: Arizona Diamondbacks
Finished at 64-98 and were 30.0 games back. The team hit .248/.302/.376 and scored 615 runs or 3.8 per game. Their team ERA was 4.26 and they gave up 742 or 4.6 per game.

Over the next week I plan to circle back and fill in some of the gaps and tie up loose ends left while I was on the DL. I'll start by doing the season finale of each of the weekly segments.

Giants Other Guys
While the Royals have an elite bullpen the back of the Giants' pitching staff may as well be the Other Guys. Rookie Hunter Strickland is their closest to a seventh inning guy but Jeremy Affeldt has served as the bridge no matter what inning he enters. Sergio Romo and Santiago Casilla are now the eighth and ninth inning standards although Romo had once been the closer. I'll be looking at how all three did this season, if they pitched against the Royals in August, their September numbers and their performance so far in the playoffs.

Royals Sweep Way to 2014 World Series
The Kansas City Royals have some extra lumber among their equipment this post season. I'm not talking about their bats. The Athletics, Angels and now the Orioles have all been a clean sweep as the Royals carry a mighty broom. A perfect 8-0 to advance to the 2014 World Series.
It's been a long journey since the Royals last trip to the World Series in 1985. If they were driving cross country a detour down to the tip of South America was involved. Royals fans like myself are rejoicing at the long awaited return.
Much has been made about how young the team is. The youngest starter Salvador Perez is the field general behind the plate at 24. First baseman Eric Hosmer is almost 200 days older and still 24 while leading in the playoffs with his bat. Across the diamond third baseman Mike Moustakas already has tied a Royals post season record of four home runs at 26. Shortstop Alcides Escobar has found a home at lead off and has reached his prime at 27. Center fielder Lorenzo Cain is emerging as a super star in these playoffs at 28. DH Billy Butler has had some key hits while also 28. Right fielder Alex Gordon has also had some important hits while showing toughness at 30 as he took a pitch to the neck and ran into a wall. Nori Aoki is like a samauri at times the way he swings his bat and roams right field well at 32. Omar Infante is the old man among the starters by another 10 days and brings a steadying influence at 32.
Then there is the super sub. The tenth man. The blur on the base paths known as Jarrod Dyson. The center field sub is 30.
The regular season saw the team enjoy many highs as they had two stints in first place in the AL Central before falling short down the stretch. The playoffs have been magical as the many extra inning and one run games sharpened the steel of the players. Winning breeds confidence and more winning. The Royals are on a hot streak and have unfinished business. Four more wins.

Royals Sweep Angels in Playoffs 2014
The Kansas City Royals didn't need extras in game three as the bats woke early and stayed active as they swept the Los Angeles Angels in three games and advance to the American League Championship Series. The young warriors on the corners Hosmer and Moustakas brought the boom sticks to provide thunder for the usual lightning show. Cain ran his highlight catch total to three for the series. While the future is bright it is also now for Kansas City. They have the talent and enthusiasm to continue this ride to the end. One night to celebrate and dream with smiles. Then its prep time for the series against the Orioles on Friday.

Royals Finally Return to Playoffs in 2014
While not in the category of those woeful Cubs fans this Royals fan is very happy the Royals finally returned to the playoffs after 29 years. It was easy for me to remember the last time they were in the playoffs because it was the year I graduated high school. I had started following the Royals during their glory days of the late seventies.
The right combination of draft picks panning out, good trades and the stars aligning allowed the Royals to claim the wild card spot in spite of Yost. Not a fan of his. He tried to mismanage the bull pen in the wild card game and the Royals over came that. That fantastic 12 inning win likely bought him another couple years.
Now the Royals start their series with the Angels. Fingers crossed that Vargas can somehow return to his pre-All Star game self. He has been rapidly declining since the break and a 1-3 September with a 6.57 ERA does not look promising. Is it possible to hit the reboot in the post season?
That Wild Card win over the Athletics was magical and maybe it can spark the team on another hot streak. The Royals have had them this season as they basked in first place for awhile. That is the mindset they need to summon. Good luck to the Royals!
