2014 Rule 5 Draft Triple A Phase part 1

After the Major League phase of the Rule 5 draft there is also a minor league draft. One part is the Triple A phase where teams have the option to draft players from Double A level teams or lower to play for their Triple A teams. The cost is $12,000 for each player

Here are the first 15 selections in 2014.

The Arizona Diamondbacks selected RHP Timothy Crabbe from the Cincinnati Reds. He pitched in 2014 at Triple A Louisville. He was 5-7, 4.13 ERA, 60 K, 1.51 WHIP, 2 SV, .281 BAA in 93.2 IP over 30 games. He was originally drafted by the Reds in the 14th round in 2009. Crabbe will be 27 on February 20.

The Colorado Rockies selected RHP Kyle Simon from the Philadelphia Phillies. He split 2014 between Double A Reading and Triple A Lehigh Valley. He was 5-2, 2.64 ERA, 33 K, 1.13 WHIP, 3 SV, .259 BAA in 61.1 IP over 36 games and 0-2, 9.42 ERA, 8 K, 2.02 WHIP, .271 BAA in 14.1 IP over 10 games at Lehigh Valley. He was originally drafted by the Orioles in the fourth round in 2011 and was traded to the Phillies in 2012. Simon will be 25 on August 18.

The Texas Rangers selected 1B\OF Roderick "Rock" Shoulders from the Chicago Cubs. He played in 2014 at Class A Advanced Daytona. He hit .223/.341/.397 with 12 HR, 42 RBI, 46 R, 1 SB in 91 games. He was originally drafted by the Cubs in the 25th round in 2011. Shoulders will be 24 on September 26.

The Houston Astros selected catcher Luis Flores from the Chicago Cubs. He split 2014 between Double A Tennessee and Triple A Iowa. He hit .252/.339/.383 with 3 HR, 13 RBI, 19 R, 0 SB in 36 games at Tennessee while throwing out 22% of attempted base thefts and .253/.440/.356 with 2 HR, 8 RBI, 16 R, 0 SB in 31 games at Iowa while throwing out 29% of attempted base thefts. He was originally drafted by the Cubs in the seventh round in 2008. Flores turned 28 on November 2nd.

The Minnesota Twins selected RHP Greg Peavey from the New York Mets. He split 2014 between Double A Binghamton and Triple A Las Vegas. He was 11-3, 2.90 ERA, 99 K, 1.04 WHIP, .221 BAA in 115.0 IP over 18 games at Binghamton and 1-5, 11.62 ERA, 24 K, 2.30 WHIP, .377 BAA in 28.2 IP over 6 games at Las Vegas. He was originally drafted by the Mets in the sixth round in 2010. Peavey will be 27 on July 11.

The Chicago White Sox selected RHP Peter Tago from the Colorado Rockies. He pitched in 2014 at Class A Advanced Modesto. He was 0-6, 6.00 ERA, 48 K, 1.85 WHIP, .281 BAA in 60.0 IP over 43 games. He was originally drafted by the Rockies with the 47th pick of the first round in 2010. Tago will be 23 on July 5th.

The Chicago Cubs selected OF\1B Ariel Ovando from the Houston Astros. He played in 2014 at Class A Tri City. He hit .237/.287/.289 with 1 HR, 14 RBI, 17 R, 0 SB in 58 games. He originally signed with the Astros in 2010 as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic. Ovando will be 22 on September 15.

The Cincinnati Reds selected catcher Camden Maron from the New York Mets. He split 2014 between Class A Advanced St Lucie and Double A Binghamton. He hit .282/.387/.362 with 3 HR, 50 RBI, 50 R, 1 SB in 98 games at St Lucie while throwing out 22% of attempted base thefts and .500/.500/.500 with 0 HR, 0 RBI, 0 R, 0 SB in 1 game at Binghamton. He was originally drafted by the Mets in the 34th round in 2009. Maron will be 24 on January 20.

The Miami Marlins selected LHP Matthew Tomshaw from the Minnesota Twins. He pitched in 2014 at Class A Advanced Fort Myers. He was 11-6, 3.50 ERA, 82 K, 1.32 WHIP, 2 SV, .285 BAA in 136.1 IP over 25 games. He was originally drafted by the Twins in the 42nd round in 2011. Tomshaw will be 26 on December 17.

The San Diego Padres selected shortstop Juan Gamboa from the New York Mets. He played in 2014 for the Diablos Rojos del Mexico in Mexico City after play in 2013 for Class A Brooklyn. He hit .306/.386/.472 with 7 HR, 50 RBI, 54 R, 6 SB in 95 games in Mexico. He originally signed with the Mets in 2010 as an international free agent out of Mexico. Gamboa will be 24 on April 18.

The Tampa Bay Rays selected OF/RHP Luis Urena from the Pittsburgh Pirates. He pitched in 2014 at Class A Jamestown after transitioning from the outfield. He was 2-2, 5.25 ERA, 11 K, 1.38 WHIP, 2 SV, .293 BAA in 24.0 IP over 17 games. He originally signed with the Pirates in 2009 as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic. Urena will be 23 on August 21.

The Atlanta Braves selected catcher Steven Rodriguez from the Arizona Diamondbacks. He split 2014 between Class A Advanced Visalia and Double A Mobile. He hit .250/.389/.500 with 0 HR, 4 RBI, 4 R, 0 SB in 9 games at Visalia while throwing at 29% of attempted base thefts and .267/.358/.352 with 0 HR, 11 RBI, 17 R, 0 SB in 39 games at Mobile while throwing out 50% of attempted base thefts. He was originally drafted by the Diamondbacks in the 15th round in 2011. Rodriguez will be 25 on January 8th.

The Cleveland Indians selected RHP Delvi Francisco from the Philadelphia Phillies. He split 2014 between Class A Williamsport and Class A Lakewood. He was 2-0, 5.14 ERA, 8 K, 1.71 WHIP, .260 BAA in 14.0 IP over 8 games at Williamsport and 1-3, 8.29 ERA, 39 K, 1.68 WHIP, 2 SV, .269 BAA in 38.0 IP over 22 games at Lakewood. He was originally signed by the Phillies in 2010 as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic. Francisco will be 23 on August 24.

The San Francisco Giants selected RHP Ramon Del Orbe from the Miami Marlins. He split 2014 between Class A Batavia and Class A Greensboro. He was 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 12 K, 0.52 WHIP, 2 SV, .082 BAA in 15.1 IP over 6 games at Batavia and 3-2, 5.09 ERA, 32 K, 1.72 WHIP, 1 SV, .318 BAA in 40.2 IP over 16 games at Greensboro. He originally signed with the Marlins in 2008 as ana mateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic. Del Orbe will be 23 on February 17.

The Detroit Tigers selected RHP Jheyson Manzueta from the Miami Marlins. He split 2014 between Class A Advanced Jupiter and Double A Jacksonville. He was 1-0, 4.15 ERA, 9 K, 1.23 WHIP, .265 BAA in 13.0 IP over 8 games at Jupiter and 4-2, 4.44 ERA, 28 K, 1.50 WHIP, 2 SV, .271 BAA in 46.2 IP over 29 games at Jacksonville. He originally signed with the Marlins in 2007 as an international free agent out of the Dominican Republic. Manzueta turned 25 on December 5th.
