Two Major One Minor 080512

Here is the 14th installment of Two Major One Minor for 2012. The players this week are Jordany Valdespin, Darin Mastroianni and Zoilo Almonte.

Valdespin is a 2B\OF with the New York Mets who has just enough power and speed to be intriguing. He has split 2012 between Triple A Buffalo and the Mets. He hit .289/.329/.430 with 5 HR, 19 RBI, 20 R, 8 SB in 34 games at Buffalo and has hit .260/.288/.488 with 7 HR, 25 RBI, 21 R, 5 SB in 59 games with New York. I think he has the tools to be a 20/20 guy if not better. In 2011 between Double A and Triple A he amassed a 17/37 split and with 7 HR and 5 SB in 123 at bats with the Mets this year its not difficult to see him capable of putting up those numbers. He originally signed with the Mets in 2007 out of the Dominican Republic. Valdespin will be 25 on December 23.

Mastroianni is an outfielder trying to catch on with the Minnesota Twins. He offers plenty of speed but not much pop. He started the season with Double A New Britain, played at Triple A Rochester and is now with the Twins. He hit .143/.231/.171 with 0 HR, 0 RBI, 6 R, 4 SB in 9 games with New Britain, hit .346/.393/.423 with 0 HR, 11 RBI, 10 R, 10 SB in 20 games with Rochester and has hit .271/.346/.406 with 2 HR, 10 RBI, 13 R, 12 SB in 45 games. Although he had more games in the Majors this season he actually had more at bats in the minors 113 to 96. That shows his stolen base rate is pretty consistent across both levels. He was originally drafted in the 16th round in 2007. Mastroianni will be 27 on August 26.

Almonte is an outfielder with the Yankees Double A team in Trenton. He is another player with a good mix of power and speed. This season he has hit .273/.316/.479 with 16 HR, 55 RBI, 49 R, 14 SB in 79 games. He is another possible 20/20 guy as he progresses. He originally signed with the Yankees as an amateur free agent in 2005 out of the Dominican Republic. Almonte turned 23 on June 10.
