Will Smith was traded by the Milwaukee Brewers to the San Francisco Giants on August 1, 2016. The Brewers in exchange received Andrew Susac and Phil Bickford.
LHP Smith had split 2016 between Class A Advanced Brevard County and Double A Biloxi while rehabbing and the Brewers. He was originally drafted by the Angels in the seventh round in 2008, was trqaded to the Royals in 2010 and traded to the Brewers in 2013. Smith turned 27 on July 10.
Susac is a catcher who had split 2016 between Class A Advanced San Jose and Triple A Sacramento. He hit 4 for 11, .364/.417/.455 with 0 HR, 2 RBI, 2 R, 0 SB in 3 games at San Jose and .273/.343/.455 with 8 HR, 36 RBI, 28 R, 0 SB in 58 games at Sacramento. Over two MLB seasons with the Giants he hit .240/.309/.407 with 6 HR, 33 RBI, 27 R, 0 SB in 87 games. He was originally drafted by the Giants in the second round in 2011. Susac turned 26 on MArch 22.
RHP Bickford had split 2016 between Class A Augusta and San Jose. He was 3-4, 2.70 ERA, 69 K, 1.07 WHIP, .220 BAA in 60.0 IP over 11 games at Augusta and 2-2, 2.73 ERA, 36 K, 1.00 WHIP, .186 BAA in 33.0 IP over 6 games at San Jose. He was originally drafted by the Giants with the 18th pick of the first round in 2015. Bickford turned 21 on July 10.
