Joel Hanrahan traded to Red Sox

Joel Hanrahan was traded by the Pittsburgh Pirates to the Boston Red Sox on December 26, 2012 along with Brock Holt. In exchange the Pirates received Mark Melancon, Stolmy Pimentel, Ivan De Jesus and Jerry Sands.

RHP Hanrahan has six seasons MLB experience pitching with the Nationals and Pirates. In 2012 he was 5-2 with a 2.72 ERA, 67 K, 1.27 WHIP, 36 SV in 59.2 IP over 63 games. For his MLB career he is 22-17 with a 3.74 ERA, 436 K, 1.39 WHIP, 96 SV in 397.1 IP over 353 games. He was originally drafted by the Dodgers in the second round in 2000. Hanrahan turned 31 on October 6th.

Holt is a second baseman who split 2012 between Double A Altoona, Triple A Indianapolis and Pittsburgh. He hit .322/.389/.432 with 2 HR, 43 RBI, 52 R, 11 SB in 102 games at Altoona, hit .432/.476/.537 with 1 HR, 7 RBI, 13 R, 5 SB in 24 games at Indianapolis and hit .292/.329/.354 with 0 HR, 3 RBI, 6 R, 0 SB in 24 games at Pittsburgh. He was originally drafted by the Pirates in the ninth round in 2009. Holt turned 24 on June 11.

RHP Melancon has four seasons MLB experience pitching with the Red Sox, Astros and Yankees. In 2012 he was 0-2 with a 6.20 ERA, 41 K, 1.27 WHIP, 1 SV in 45.0 IP over 41 games. For his MLB career he is 10-7 with a 4.07 ERA, 139 K, 1.26 WHIP, 21 SV in 157.0 IP over 147 games. He was originally drafted by the Yankees in the ninth round in 2006. Melancon will be 28 on March 28.

RHP Pimentel pitched in 2012 at Double A Portland where he was 6-7 with a 4.59 ERA, 86 K, 1.36 WHIP in 115.2 IP over 22 games. He originally signed with the Red Sox as an amateur free agent in 2006 out of the Dominican Republic. Pimentel will be 23 on February 1st.

De Jesus and Sands were part of the 9 player deal between the Dodgers and Red Sox in August.

De Jesus is a 2B\3B who has two seasons MLB experience playing with the Dodgers and Red Sox. In 2012 before the trade he played at Triple A Albuquerque and Los Angeles and hit .295/.333/.415 with 3 HR, 33 RBI, 32 R, 1 SB in 60 games at Albuquerque and hit .273/.324/.364 with 0 HR, 4 RBI, 5 R, 1 SB in 23 games at Los Angeles. After the trade he played at Triple A Pawtucket and Boston and hit .385/.429/.423 with 0 HR, 0 RBI, 5 R, 1 SB in 7 games at Pawtucket and was hitless in eight at bats over eight games at Boston. He was originally drafted by the Dodgers in the second round in 2005. De Jesus turned 25 on May 1st.

Sands is an OF\1B who has two seasons MLB experience playing with the Dodgers. He split 2012 between Triple A Albuquerque and Los Angeles as he hit .296/.375/.524 with 26 HR, 107 RBI, 84 R, 1 SB in 119 games at Albuquerque and hit .174/.208/.261 with 0 HR, 1 RBI, 2 R, 0 SB in 9 games at Los Angeles. He joined the Red Sox after the season. He was originally drafted by the Dodgers in the 25th round in 2008. Sands turned 25 on September 28.
