Chasing 50-50 083115

This is the fourth year of my Chasing 50-50 segment. It started three seasons ago as we followed Matt Kemp then of the Dodgers in his self proclaimed attempt to hit 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases. The 2015 season is under way and we are going to follow Kemp's efforts to see if he can make another run. As long as he is playing Kemp will always be part of this. Regulars Mike Trout of the Angels and Carlos Gonzalez of the Rockies are still in the mix because I think they also have the speed\power combo capable of reaching the mark some day. Plus we will also start with Carlos Gomez of the Brewers, George Springer of the Astros and Joc Pederson of the Dodgers. Others will be added throughout the season as their production warrants. 50/50 is a lofty goal but this is also a way to honor the guys that do possess the power and speed tools. On May 14 adding Paul Goldschmidt of the Diamondbacks and Justin Upton of the Padres. On May 21 adding Anthony Rizzo of the Cubs and Todd Frazier of the Reds. On June 13 adding Gomez's teammate Ryan Braun. On July 3 adding Starling Marte of the Pirates Gonzalez's teammate Charlie Blackmon and Goldschmidt's teammate AJ Pollock. On July 25 adding Manny Machado of the Orioles, Steven Souza Jr of the Rays, Brian Dozier of the Twins and Springer's teammate Jose Altuve. On August 31 adding Curtis Granderson of the Mets and Rizzo's teammate Kris Bryant. This is week 20 of the chase.

Ghost of 62 082315

The reference in the title is the 1962 Mets who are regarded as the worst of the Modern Era for all teams after 1900. The team finished 40-120 and 60.5 games back. For the season the team hit .240/.318/.361 and scored 617 runs which was 3.8 per game. The team ERA was 5.04 and they gave up 948 runs or 5.9 per game.

This is the third year of this series where each week I will check in on the MLB teams with the worst win-loss records and how they measure up to 1962. This week its a crowded cellar as those teams are the Philadelphia Phillies, Colorado Rockies, Miami Marlins, Cincinnati Reds, Milwaukee Brewers, Oakland Athletics, Boston Red Sox, Seattle Mariners and Cleveland Indians.

Chasing 50-50 082315

This is week 19 of the chase.
