Sean Marshall traded to Reds

Sean Marshall was traded by the Chicago Cubs to the Cincinnati Reds on December 23, 2011. In exchange the Cubs receive Travis Wood, Dave Sappelt and minor league player Ronald Torreyes.


LHP Marshall pitched six seasons for the Cubs. In 2011 he was 6-6 with a 2.26 ERA, 79 strikeouts, 1.10 WHIP and five saves in 75.2 innings over 78 games. For his career he is 32-40 with a 3.96 ERA, 439 strikeouts, 1.33 WHIP and seven saves in 530 innings over 292 games. He was originally drafted by the Cubs in the sixth round in 2003.


LHP Wood pitched two seasons for the Reds and split the 2011 season between Triple A and with the Reds. He was 2-3 with a 5.33 ERA, 47 strikeouts and 1.55 WHIP in 52.1 innings over 10 games at Triple A and was 6-6 with a 4.84 ERA, 76 strikeouts and 1.49 WHIP in 106 innings over 22 games with the Reds. For his career he is 11-10 with a 4.18 ERA, 162 strikeouts and 1.29 WHIP in 208.2 innings over 39 games. He was originally drafted by the Reds in the second round in 2005. 

Sappelt is an outfielder who split the 2011 season between Triple A and with the Reds, He hit .313/.337/.458 with seven home runs, 29 RBI, 40 runs and 4 steals in 74 games at Triple A and hit .243/.289/.318 with zero home runs, five RBI, 14 runs and one steal in 38 games with the Reds. He was originally drafted by the Reds in the ninth round in 2008.


Torreyes played second, third and shortstop at the Class A level in 2011. He hit .356/.398/.457 with three home runs, 41 RBI, 53 runs and 12 steals in 67 games. He originally signed with the Reds as an amateur free agent in 2010 out of Venezuela.
