Luis Martinez was traded by the San Diego Padres to the Texas Rangers on December 21, 2011. In exchange the Padres receive minor league player Ryan Kelly.
Martinez is a catcher who split the 2011 season between Triple A and with the Padres. He hit .323/.379/.434 with one home run, 28 RBI, 24 runs and 2 steals in 58 games at Triple A and hit .203/.309/.305 with one home run, 10 RBI, seven runs and one steal in 22 games with the Padres. He was originally drafted by the Padres in the 12th round in 2007.
RHP Kelly pitched at the Class A Advanced level in 2011. He was 3-6 with a 3.95 ERA, 64 strikeouts and 1.18 WHIP in 82 innings over 40 games. He was originally drafted by the Pirates in the 26th round in 2006.
