2011 Rule 5 Draft Double A Phase

After the Major League phase of the Rule 5 draft there is also a minor league draft. One part is the Double A phase where teams have the option to draft players from Class A level teams or lower to play for their Double A teams. The cost is $4,000 for each player. In 2011 only two teams decided to participate in the Double A phase.

The Baltimore Orioles selected third baseman Matthew Sweeney from the Tampa Bay Rays. Sweeney actually played at the Double A level in 2011. He hit .154/.262/.282 with seven home runs, 29 RBI, 25 runs and one steal in 82 games. He was originally drafted by the Angels in the eighth round in 2006.

The Washington Nationals selected outfielder Matthew Buschmann from the San Diego Padres. It would appear the Nationals plan to convert him to the outfield since he played only one game there while spending the rest of the time as a RHP. Being an National League affiliate he did some hitting so he spent some time at the plate in both Double A and Triple A in 2011. He hit .375/.375/.750 with one home run, three RBI, six runs and one steal in four games at Double A and hit .167/.167/.222 with zero home runs, zero RBI, three runs and one steal in 17 games at Triple A. He was originally drafted by the Padres in the 15th round in 2006.
