College Spotlight 031114

Here is my week fourth installment of College Spotlight for 2014. This week I am looking at Michael Thomas of Kentucky and Ben Wetzler of Oregon State.

Thomas is a senior catcher out of Elizabethtown High School in Elizabethtown, KY. While the whole offense unleashed against Ball State last weekend Thomas had a productive day at the plate Saturday going 3 for 4 with a double, home run, 6 RBI and 2 runs scored in the 24-1 victory. This season he is hitting .391/.500/.630 with 2 HR, 20 RBI, 14 R, 1 SB in 14 games. Last season as a junior he hit .239/.353/.326 with 3 HR, 21 RBI, 23 R, 4 SB in 49 games. The Wildcats have a potent offense with six players hitting over .340 and two over .400.

Wetzler is a senior LHP out of Clackamas High School in Clackamas, OR. On Friday he set the tone for the pitching staff which had three shut outs against Northern Illinois over the weekend. His line was 8.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 12 K in 105 pitches. This season he is 2-0, 0.57 ERA, 17 K, 0.51 WHIP in 15.2 IP over 2 games. Last season as a junior her was 10-1, 2.25 ERA, 83 K, 1.20 WHIP in 96.0 IP over 16 games. The Beavers are establishing themselves as one of the best pitching staffs in the nation with a 1.97 team ERA.
