Here is my week third installment of College Spotlight for 2014. This week I am looking at Jimmy Pickens of Michigan State and Seth Varner of Miami of Ohio.
Pickens is a junior OF\C out of Brother Rice High School in West Bloomfield, MI. He had a standout game at the plate Sunday going 4 for 4 with a HR, 6 RBI, 4 R and 2 walks in an 18-13 win over Eastern Michigan. That helped break him out of a slow start to the season as he is now hitting .250/.386/.472 with 1 HR, 10 RBI, 7 R, 2 SB in 10 games. Last season as a sophomore he hit .303/.377/.528 with 9 HR, 42 RBI, 39 R, 6 SB in 50 games.
Varner is a senior LHP out of Clermont Northeastern High School in Batavia, OH. On Friday he carried a no hitter into the eighth before giving up a hit in the 6-0 victory over Davidson. His line for the game was 8.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 8 K while facing 29 batters. This season he is 1-1, 2.37 ERA, 22 K, 0.89 WHIP in 19.0 IP over 3 games. Last season as a junior he was 2-1, 5.13 ERA, 25 K, 1.35 WHIP, 1 SV in 33.1 IP over 21 games with three starts.
