College Spotlight 040912

Here is my week eight installment of College Spotlight for 2012. This week I am looking at Roger Bernal of Texas-Pan American and Marcus Stroman of Duke.

Senior first baseman Roger Bernal of Texas-Pan American entered last week leading the country in hitting with a .494 average. His weekend series yielded a couple of one for four games but he still managed a hit in all four games of the week. So far this season he is hitting .468/.505/.649 with 1 HR, 20 RBI, 29 R and 3 SB in 22 games. He also hit well his Junior season hitting .343/.382/.429 with 2 HR, 25 RBI, 37 R and 7 SB in 52 games. It will be interesting to see if he can keep pace and chase down the batting title.

Junior RHP Marcus Stroman of Duke went into last week leading the nation in strikeouts with 72. He added to that total with another 13 on Friday. Against Clemson he pitched 9.0 innings while allowing seven hits, one unearned run and three walks but Duke lost 4-1 in 11 innings. For the season he is 3-3 with a 2.17 ERA, 85 K, and 1.08 WHIP in 58.0 innings over eight games. That is building on his Sophomore season when he was 3-4 with a 2.80 ERA, 90 K, 1.25 WHIP in 64.1 innings over 17 games which included eight starts.
