Marlon Byrd traded to Red Sox

Marlon Byrd was traded by the Chicago Cubs to the Boston Red Sox on April 21, 2012. In exchange the Cubs will receive Michael Bowden and a player to be named later.


Byrd is an outfielder in his 11th season in the Majors. He played with the Phillies 2002 to 2005, was traded to the Nationals in May 2005 and continued with them through 2006, signed and played with the Rangers 2007 to 2009, and signed and played with the Cubs 2010 through the trade this season. Before the trade he was hitting .070/.149/.070 with 0 HR, 2 RBI, 1 R, 0 SB in 13 games. For his career he has hit .278/.337/.416 with 81 HR, 438 RBI, 516 R, 49 SB in 1069 games. He was originally drafted by the Phillies in the 10th round in 1999. Byrd will turn 35 on August 30.


RHP Bowden is in his fifth season with the Rode Sox although he has split plenty of time with the minors. He split 2011 between Triple A and the Red Sox and was 3-3 with a 2.73 ERA, 61 K, 1.16 WHIP, 16 SV in 52.2 IP over 41 games at Triple A and was 0-0 with a 4.05 ERA, 17 K, 1.50 WHIP in 20.0 IP over 14 games with the Red Sox. For his career Bowden is 2-2 with a 5.61 ERA, 48 K, 1.58 WHIP in 59.1 IP over 39 games. Before the trade he was 0-0 with a 3.00 ERA, 3 K, 1.00 WHIP in 3.0 IP over 2 games. He was originally drafted by the Red Sox with the 47th pick of the first round in 2005. Bowden will turn 26 on September 9.
