Ivan Rodriguez retires

Ivan Rodriguez announced his retirement from playing baseball in April 2012. He was originally signed by the Texas Rangers as an amateur free agent in 1988 out of Puerto Rico. His Major League career spanned 21 seasons as a premier catcher starting with 12 with the Rangers (1991-2002), one with the Marlins (2003), five with the Tigers (2004-2008), part of 2008 was also played with the Yankees, 2009 was split between the Astros and Rangers and he played two seasons with the Nationals (2010-2011).


For his career Rodriguez hit .296/.334/.464 with 311 HR, 1332 RBI, 1354 R and 127 SB in 2543 games. He also threw out 661 attempted base thieves at an impressive rate of 46%. 


Rodriguez was an All Star 14 times including ten with the Rangers (1992-2001) and four with the Tigers (2004-2007). He collected 13 gold gloves and seven silver slugger awards. He was the American League MVP in 1999 as a Ranger. He was on a World Series Championship team in 2003 with the Marlins.
