I just witnessed one of the worst implosions by a pitcher without giving up a hit. The Kansas City Royals had taken a 4 to 3 lead in the top of the 12th inning and Jonathan Broxton came in to close down the Oakland Athletics. That was the plan any how.
Broxton got off to a good start by striking out Daric Barton. Then he didn't get any help from shortstop Alcides Escobar as he had a fielding error that allowed Seth Smith to get on. That seemed to take Broxton out of his rhythm and he struggled to find the strike zone while walking Jemile Weeks and Eric Sogard. With the bases loaded Coco Crisp grounded out to second as Seth Smith scored to tie the game. Broxton then hit Yoenis Cespedes to load the bases again. Moments later the game was over when Broxton also hit Jonny Gomes to force in the winning run for the Athletics. The closer position is certainly in turmoil for the Royals.
