College Spotlight 042312

Here is my week ten installment of College Spotlight for 2012. This week I am looking at Andrew Thurman of UC-Irvine, Derek Smith of Pitt-Bradford and Bryan-Lippincott of Concordia-St Paul.

Sophomore RHP Andrew Thurman of UC-Irvine pitched a no hitter in a 4-0 victory against Long Beach State Friday. His stat line was 9.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K in 110 pitches. Only a walk away from perfection on the same weekend Philip Humber threw his perfect game for the White Sox. For the season Thurman is 4-2 with a 3.26 ERA, 43 K, 0.96 WHIP in 58.0 IP over 10 games. As a Freshman Thurman was 4-3 with a 3.82 ERA, 64 K, 1.37 WHIP in 75.1 IP over 23 games of which eight he started.

In trying to keep with the near perfection theme I wanted to find the player with the highest batting average in all the land and found two tied with an impressive .538 average. Bryan Lippincott of Concordia-St Paul currently leads Division II and Derek Smith of Pitt-Bradford currently leads Division III with that average. Since they are tied I'm letting them share the spotlight I normally reserve for one hitter.

Senior third baseman Bryan Lippincott of Concordia-St Paul is hitting .538/.631/.949 with 8 HR, 46 RBI, 39 R, 7 SB in 34 games. He has shown the ability to hit previously by hitting .434/.463/.706 with 6 HR, 39 RBI, 38 R, 10 SB in 34 games as a Junior and .410/.468/.693 with 10 HR, 51 RBI, 57 R, 17 SB in 52 games as a Sophomore.

Junior Derek Smith of Pitt-Bradford played second base and shortstop. This season he is hitting .538/.575/.827 with 3 HR, 41 RBI, 30 R, 9 SB in 30 games. As a Sophomore he hit .459/.547/.721 with 3 HR, 41 RBI, 39 R, 6 SB in 33 games.

Good luck to both Lippincott and Smith as they chase the batting titles in their respective divisions.
