Juan Nicasio of the Philadelphia Phillies was traded to the St Louis Cardinals on September 6, 2017. The Phillies in exchange received Eliezer Alvarez.
RHP Nicasio was 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 1 K, 0.00 WHIP, .000 BAA in 1.1 IP over 2 games with the Phillies after being claimed off waivers from the Pirates on August 31. He was 2-5, 2.85 ERA, 60 K, 1.12 WHIP, .222 BAA, 2 SV in 60.0 IP over 65 games with the Pirates. Over nine MLB seasons with the Cardinals, Phillies, Pirates and Rockies he was 35-37, 4.59 ERA, 561 K, 1.41 WHIP, .268 BAA, 5 SV in 622.0 IP over 263 games with 82 GS. He originally signed with the Rockies in 2006 as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic. Nicasio turned 31 on August 31.
Second baseman Alvarez had split 2017 between Rookie Gulf Coast while rehabbing and Double A Springfield. He hit 6 for 24, .250/.296/.458 with 1 HR, 2 RBI, 4 R, 1 SB in 7 games at Gulf Coast and 46 for 186, .247/.321/.382 with 4 HR, 26 RBI, 29 R, 8 SB in 54 games at Springfield. He originally signed with the Cardinals in 2011 as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic. Alvarez will be 23 on October 22.
