Elvin Rodriguez was traded by the Los Angeles Angels to the Detroit Tigers on September 15, 2017 to complete the earlier Justin Upton deal. The RHP split 2017 between Rookie Orem and Class A Burlington. He was 5-1, 2.50 ERA, 49 K, 1.04 WHIP, .224 BAA in 54.0 IP over 11 GS at Orem and 0-2, 4.50 ERA, 12 K, 1.64 WHIP, .345 BAA in 14.0 IP over 3 GS at Burlington. He originally signed with the Angels in 2014 as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic. Rodriguez turned 19 on March 31.
