Drew Smyly traded to Mariners

Drew Smyly was traded by the Tampa Bay Rays to the Seattle Mariners on January 11, 2017. The Rays in exchange received Mallex Smith, Carlos Vargas and Ryan Yarbrough.

LHP Smyly was 7-12, 4.88 ERA, 167 K, 1.27 WHIP, .259 BAA in 175.1 IP over 30 games with the Rays in 2016. Over five MLB seasons with the Rays and Tigers he was 31-27, 3.74 ERA, 552 K, 1.20 WHIP, .243 BAA, 2 SV in 570.1 IP over 156 games with 85 GS. He was originally drafted by the Tigers in the second round in 2010 and was traded to the Rays in 2014. Smyly will be 28 on June 13.

Smith is an outfielder who had been traded to the Mariners earlier in the day.

LHP Yarbrough was 12-4, 2.95 ERA, 99 K, 1.11 WHIP, .232 BAA in 128.1 IP over 25 games at Double A Jackson in 2016. He was originally drafted by the Mariners in the fourth round in 2014. Yarbrough turned 25 on December 31.

Vargas is a shortstop who hit .242/.344/.391 with 7 HR, 35 RBI, 41 R, 2 SB in 62 games in the Dominican Summer League in 2016. He originally signed with the Mariners in 2015 as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic. Vargas will be 18 on March 18.
