Mallex Smith traded to Mariners

Mallex Smith was traded by the Atlanta Braves to the Seattle Mariners on January 11, 2017 along with Shae Simmons. The Braves in exchange received Luiz Gohara and Thomas Burrows.

Smith is an outfielder who split 2016 between Double A Mississippi while rehabbing, Triple A Gwinnett and the Braves. He hit 7 for 16, .438/.550/.563 with 0 HR, 4 RBI, 4 R, 3 SB in 5 games at Mississippi, 6 for 15, .400/.438/.667 with 0 HR, 0 RBI, 5 R, 1 SB in 3 games at Gwinnett and .238/.316/.365 with 3 HR, 22 RBI, 28 R, 16 SB in 72 games with the Braves. He was originally drafted by the Padres in the fifth round in 2012 and was traded to the Braves in 2014. Smith will be 24 on May 6th.

RHP Simmons split 2016 between Rookie Gulf Coast and Class A Rome while rehabbing, Gwinnett and the Braves. He was 0-0, 6.00 ERA, 5 K, 1.33 WHIP, .167 BAA in 3.0 IP over 3 games at Gulf Coast, 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 4 K, 0.90 WHIP, .167 BAA in 3.1 IP over 4 games at Rome, 0-0, 1.50 ERA, 14 K, 1.33 WHIP, .167 BAA, 1 SV in 12.0 IP over 12 games at Gwinnett and 0-0, 1.35 ERA, 3 K, 0.90 WHIP, .240 BAA in 6.2 IP over 7 games with the Braves. Over two MLB seasons with the Braves he was 1-2, 2.54 ERA, 26 K, 1.13 WHIP, .208 BAA, 1 SV in 28.1 IP over 33 games. He was originally drafted by the Braves in the 22nd round in 2012. Simmons will be 27 on September 3rd. 

LHP Gohara split 2016 between Short Season A Everett and Class A Clinton. He was 2-0, 1.76 ERA, 21 K, 1.04 WHIP, .224 BAA in 15.1 IP over 3 games at Everett and 5-2, 1.82 ERA, 60 K, 1.18 WHIP, .223 BAA in 54.1 IP over 10 games at Clinton. He originally signed with the Mariners in 2012 as an amateur free agent out of Brazil. Gohara will be 21 on July 31.

LHP Burrows was 0-1, 2.55 ERA, 37 K, 1.38 WHIP, .240 BAA, 6 SV in 24.2 IP over 20 games at Everett in 2016. He was originally drafted by the Mariners in the fourth round in 2016. Burrows will be 23 on September 14.
