Here is my tenth Two Major One Minor segment of 2014. This is my fourth year of doing this series where I feature two Major League players and one minor league player each week. This week I am featuring Johnny Cueto, Jason Hammel and Tyler Cravy.
RHP Cueto of the Cincinnati Reds currently leads the MLB with lowest batting average allowed with .160. For the season he is pitching 5-5, 1.97 ERA, 97 K, 0.79 WHIP in 96.0 IP over 13 games. That is a dominating season for a 29-33 Reds team that is tied for second to last in runs scored. That could be called King Felix syndrome. He is in his seventh season and putting together some of his best numbers to date. He originally signed with the Reds in 2004 as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic. Cueto turned 28 on February 15.
RHP Hammel of the Chicago Cubs happened to have the second best batting average allowed at .191. He is easily having his best season at 6-3, 2.53 ERA, 70 K, 0.88 WHIP in 78.1 IP over 12 games. The Cubs currently have the third worst MLB record at 26-36 and are 25th at scoring runs. Yet with that lack of support the nine season MLB vet is having a stellar season. He was originally drafted by the Devil Rays in the tenth round in 2002. Hammel will be 32 on September 2nd.
RHP Cravy of Double A Huntsville is dominating the Southern League as he leads the league in wins, ERA, WHIP and has held batters to a .183 average. This season he is 8-1, 1.63 ERA, 57 K, 0.84 WHIP in 66.1 IP over 13 games. The Milwaukee Brewers have to be keeping a close eye on his successes as he is having his best season ever. He was originally drafted by the Brewers in the 17th round in 2009. Cravy will be 25 on July 13.
