2012 Where are they now 2009 top prospects NL East

Each year the prospect lists come out and the future of each team is reevaluated accordingly. I'm going to look at who the top prospect of each National League East team was in 2009 and how they did in 2011.


The Atlanta Braves top prospect was RHP Tommy Hanson. He was originally drafted by the Braves in the 22nd round in 2005. He pitched in 2011 with the Braves and was 11-7 with a 3.60 ERA, 142 strikeouts and 1.17 WHIP in 130 innings over 22 games.


The Florida Marlins top prospect was outfielder Cameron Maybin. He was originally drafted by the Tigers with the 10th pick of the first round in 2005. He was traded to the Marlins in 2007 and then to the Padres in 2010. He played 2011 with the Padres and hit .264/.323/.393 with nine home runs, 40 RBI, 82 runs and 40 steals in 137 games.


The New York Mets top prospect was outfielder Fernando Martinez. He was originally signed by the Mets as an amateur free agent in 2005 out of the Dominican Republic. He split 2011 between Triple A and the Mets. He hit .260/.329/.417 with eight home runs, 30 RBI, 29 runs and zero steals in 63 games at Triple A and hit .227/.261/.455 with one home run, two RBI, three runs and zero steals in 11 games with the Mets. He was waived by the Mets after the season and claimed by the Astros.


The Philadelphia Phillies top prospect was outfielder Dominic Brown.  He was originally drafted by the Phillies in the 20th round in 2006. He split 2011 between Class A Advanced, Triple A and the Phillies. He hit .368/.429/.737 with two home runs, four RBI, four runs and 2 steals in 5 games at Class A Advanced, hit .261/.391/.370 with three home runs, 15 RBI, 22 runs and 12 steals in 41 games at Triple A and hit .245/.333/.391 with five home runs, 19 RBI, 28 runs and 3 steals in 56 games with the Phillies.


The Nationals top prospect was RHP Jordan Zimmermann. He was originally drafted by the Nationals in the second round in 2007. He pitched in 2011 with the Nationals and was 8-11 with a 3.18 ERA, 124 strikeouts and 1.15 WHIP in 161.1 innings over 26 games.
