Each year the prospect lists come out and the future of each team is reevaluated accordingly. I'm going to look at who the top prospect of each National League East team was in 2008 and how they did in 2011.
The Atlanta Braves top prospect was outfielder Jordan Schafer. He was originally drafted by the Braves in the third round in 2005. He was traded to the Astros on July 31, 2011. His 2011 season was split between Triple A and with both teams. He hit .256/.309/.323 with one home runs, 21 RBI, 21 runs and 6 steals in 42 games at the Brave's Triple A, hit .240/.307/.316 with one home runs, seven RBI, 32 runs and 15 steals in 52 games with the Braves, hit .500/.545/.600 with zero home runs, three RBI, four runs and 3 steals in five games at the Astros Triple A and hit .245/.314/.311 with one home runs, six RBI, 14 runs and 6 steals 30 games with the Astros.
The Florida Marlins top prospect was RHP Chris Volstad. He was originally drafted by the Marlins with the 16th pick in the first round in 2005. He split his 2011 season between Triple A and the Marlins. He was 1-1 with a 4.42 ERA, 14 strikeouts and 1.58 WHIP in 18.1 innings over three games at Triple A and was 5-13 with a 4.89 ERA, 117 strikeouts and 1.42 WHIP in 165.2 innings over 29 games with the Marlins. He was traded to the Cubs after the season on January 5, 2012.
The New York Mets top prospect was outfielder Fernando Martinez. He was originally signed by the Mets as an amateur free agent in 2005 out of the Dominican Republic. He split 2011 between Triple A and the Mets. He hit .260/.329/.417 with eight home runs, 30 RBI, 29 runs and zero steals in 63 games at Triple A and hit .227/.261/.455 with one home run, two RBI, three runs and zero steals in 11 games with the Mets. He was waived by the Mets after the season and claimed by the Astros.
The Philadelphia Phillies top prospect was RHP Carlos Carrasco. He was originally signed by the Phillies in 2003 out of Venezuela. He was traded to the Indians in 2009. In 2011 he was 8-9 with a 4.62 ERA, 85 strikeouts and 1.36 WHIP in 124.2 innings over 21 games with the Indians.
The Washington Nationals top prospect was first baseman Chris Marrero. He was originally drafted by the Nationals with the 15th pick of the first round in 2006. He split the 2011 season between Triple A and with the Nationals. He hit .300/.375/.449 with 14 home runs, 69 RBI, 59 runs and 3 steals in 127 games at Triple A and hit .247/.274/.294 with zero home runs, 10 RBI, six runs and zero steals in 31 games with the Nationals.
