College Spotlight 040313

Here is my week seven installment of College Spotlight for 2013. This week I am looking at Mike Papi of Virginia and Mat Batts of UNC-Wilmington.

Sophomore Mike Papi is an OF\1B out of Tunkhannock High School in Tunkhannock, PA. He had a perfect 4 for 4 game last Friday against the Miami Hurricanes as he had 3 doubles, RBI, 3 R, BB while playing left field in the 15-4 victory. His bat has helped him work his way into the starting line up as he has hit .446/.562/.732 with 2 HR, 15 RBI, 20 R, 1 SB in 22 games with 14 starts. Last season as a freshman he hit .283/.395/.387 with 1 HR, 17 RBI, 24 R, 5 SB in 35 games with 28 starts. The Cavaliers are one of the top teams at 26-3. Papi gives them another offensive weapon as they still have series with Georgia Tech, Florida State and North Carolina down the stretch.

Junior LHP Mat Batts is out of Mount Tabor High School in Winston-Salem, NC. He played his freshman year at Western Carolina. Last Friday Bats tossed a complete game shut out against Georgia State in a 9-0 victory. His line for the game was 9.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 K in 108 pitches. For the season he is 4-1, 2.47 ERA, 43 K, 1.10 WHIP in 47.1 IP over 7 games. Last season as a sophomore he was 6-5, 3.04 ERA, 90 K, 1.28 WHIP in 100.2 IP over 16 games. Batts has shown durability with his second complete game this season after also having two in 2012.
