Here is my week tenth installment of College Spotlight for 2013. This week I am looking at Tony Kemp of Vanderbilt and Aaron Nola of LSU.
Junior second baseman Tony Kemp is out of Centennial High School in Nashville, TN. The Commodores lead off hitter does a good job getting on base and making his way around the base paths. He is hitting .387/.480/.491 with 0 HR, 25 RBI, 45 R, 22 SB in 42 games. Last season as a sophomore he hit .261/.392/.386 with 1 HR, 31 RBI, 55 R, 21 SB in 63 games. He is in the mold of the Astros spark plug Jose Altuve.
Sophomore RHP Aaron Nola is out of Catholic High School in Baton Rouge, LA. Last Friday he pitched a three hit complete game shut out against Alabama. In the 5-0 victory his line was 9.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 10 K in 109 pitches. For the season he is 7-0, 2.15 ERA, 82 K, 0.84 WHIP in 71.0 IP over 10 games. Last season as a freshman he was 7-4, 3.61 ERA, 89 K, 1.06 WHIP in 89.2 IP over 19 games. A power pitcher with such control is a prize and the Tigers will have their ace for a run at the play offs this season and next.
