Here is my week ninth installment of College Spotlight for 2013. This week I am looking at Jake Peter of Creighton and Reid Roper of Illinois. Both share the fact they both play in the infield and also pitch for their teams.
Sophomore INF\RHP Peter is out of Mason City High School in Mason City, IA. He splits time at second base and on the mound as a dominating closer. This season he is hitting .375/.438/.467 with 1 HR, 23 RBI, 21 R, 6 SB in 28 games. On the mound he is 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 13 K, 0.44 WHIP, 5 SV in 9.0 IP over 9 games. Last season as a freshman he did not pitch and struggled at the plate when he hit .217/.364/.326 with 1 HR, 18 RBI, 25 R, 4 SB in 56 games. Peter is already one of the Blue Jays cornerstone players and if he continues to develop should be one of the nation's best as a junior next year.
Sophomore INF\RHP Roper is out of Harrisburg High School in Harrisburg, IL. Roper also plays second and shares duties as the closer. In 2013 he is hitting .271/.340/.448 with 3 HR, 14 RBI, 14 R, 0 SB in 27 games. As a reliever he is 0-0, 2.79 ERA, 8 K, 0.93 WHIP, 5 SV in 9.2 IP over 10 games. Last season as a freshman he hit .293/.396/.385 with 1 HR, 20 RBI, 32 R, 1 SB in 52 games and was also 1-0, 4.05 ERA, 9 K, 0.82 WHIP, 3 SV in 13.1 IP over 13 games. It will be interesting to see how the Fighting Illini utilize their dual weapon down the stretch with five conference series left.
