The Buffalo Bisons unleashed a record offensive assault against the Syracuse Chiefs in a 27-9 game on April 18, 2013. When I first saw the box score I had to double check whether it was a Pacific Coast League game where such out puts tend to be more common. Another surprising thing is for the balls to be so alive in April. The 27 runs and 29 hits by the Bisons set International League records.
The game reminded me of a Pacific Coast game last August where Omaha dominated Tuscon 20-3. But again that was a Pacific Coast game and in a month where the weather is more common for such offensive numbers. The Bisons had multiple hits for spots one through eight in the order: Jim Negrych 4-7, Anthony Gose 2-7, Moises Sierra 6-6, Mauro Gomez 2-5, Luis Jimenez 5-7, Andy LaRoche 2-5, Ryan Langerhans 3-6 and Josh Thole 4-6. Ryan Goins was the odd man out by hitting 1 for 7. The Bisons had five home runs with two from Langerhans and one each from LaRoche, Negrych and Jimenez.
Two of the more impressive performances were by Negrych and Sierra. Negrych hit for the cycle. As seen above Sierra was a perfect 6 for 6 at the plate. Throw in the 8 RBI by Jimenez and this was one of the most impressive offensive displays ever seen.
On the flip side was Syracuse pitcher Tanner Roark who took the brunt of the early damage. His line for the game was 3.2 IP, 12 H, 10 R, 10 ER, 1 BB, 2 K and 1 home run surrendered. The rest of the staff did little to cool off the Bisons bats. They'll just have to shake it off and work to avoid more lop sided games this season.
