Two Major One Minor 042313

Here is the fourth Two Major One Minor segment of 2013. This is my third year of doing this series where I feature two Major League players and one minor league player each week. This week I am featuring Derek Holland, Shelby Miller and Brandon Workman.

LHP Holland of the Texas Rangers is one of those young pitchers that keeps showing so much promise with brilliant performances and mixes it in with huge stumbles which make you question his development. He had started the year very strong and then yesterday was lucky to escape with a no decision as he had a devil in his box score: 5.2 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 4 BB, 7 K. The seven strikeouts showcase his live arm but the four walks show he is still prone to control issues. For the season he is 1-1. 3.25 ERA, 22 K, 0.98 WHIP in 27.2 IP over 4 games. In his fifth MLB season for his career he is 40-30, 4.65 ERA. 490 K, 1.33 WHIP in 596.2 IP over 112 games. He was originally drafted by the Rangers in the 25th round in 2006. Holland will be 27 on October 9th.

RHP Miller is the ace of the future that the St Louis Cardinals hope compliments Adam Wainwright like the retiring Chris Carpenter did. Miller has started off his rookie campaign well as he picked up his third win of the season yesterday in a well pitched 3-2 game against the Washington Nationals. His line for the game was 6.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB 8 K in 98 pitches. For the season he is now 3-1, 2.16 ERA, 26 K, 0.88 WHIP in 25.0 IP over 4 games. He was originally drafted by the Cardinals with the 19th pick of the first round in 2009. Miller will be 23 on October 10.

RHP Workman is pitching with Double A Portland in the Boston Red Sox organization. He is starting this season strong as he is 3-0, 3.00 ERA, 25 K, 0.67 WHIP in 18.0 IP over 3 games. It is impressive and coincidental that both his K/9 rate and K/BB ratio are both 12.50. He'll be one to keep an eye on. He was originally drafted by the Red Sox in the second round in 2010. Workman will be 25 on August 13.
