Here is my fourth installment of College Spotlight for 2015. This week I am looking at Travis Watkins of East Carolina and Chris Chism of Tennessee Tech.
Watkins is a redshirt sophomore out of Cox Mill High School in Concord, NC. On Sunday he had a perfect day at the plate going 5 for 5 with a double, one RBI and two runs as he hit fifth and played catcher in a 20-4 victory over Elon. This season he is hitting .415/.443/.538 with 2 HR, 13 RBI, 9 R, 4 SB in 17 games. His caught stealing rate is 54%. He started out 2014 hitting .360/.452/.360 with 0 HR, 5 RBI, 0 R, 1 SB in 9 games before an elbow injury ended his season and he received a medical redshirt. Each of the last three seasons he has been on the Johnny Bench Award watch list. The Pirates are 13-6.
RHP Chism is a senior out of Alonso High School in Tampa, FL. He had one of the top national performances on Saturday pitching a 2-0 complete game shut out over UT-Martin. His line for the game was 9.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 17 K in 123 pitches. For the season he is 3-0, 2.61 ERA, 22 K, 1.21 WHIP, .253 BAA in 20.2 IP over 7 games. Last season he was 4-4, 5.84 ERA, 45 K, 1.56 WHIP, .309 BAA in 57.0 IP over 14 games. The Golden Eagles are 9-8.
