Ken Giles traded to Astros

Ken Giles was traded by the Philadelphia Phillies to the Houston Astros on December 12, 2015 along with Jonathan Arauz. The Phillies in exchange received Brett Oberholtzer, Harold Arauz, Mark Appel, Tom Eshelman and Vince Velasquez.

RHP Giles was 6-3, 1.80 ERA, 87 K, 1.20 WHIP, .219 BAA, 15 SV in 70.0 IP over 69 games with the Phillies in 2015. Over three MLB seasons with the Astros and Phillies he is 9-6, 2.18 ERA, 178 K, 1.11 WHIP, .211 BAA, 17 SV in 136.0 IP over 137 games. He was originally drafted by the Phillies in the seventh round in 2011. Giles will be 26 on September 20.

Arauz is a shortstop who hit .254/.309/.370 with 2 HR, 18 RBI, 21 R, 2 SB in 44 games at Rookie Gulf Coast in 2015. He originally signed with the Phillies in 2014 as an amateur free agent out of Panama. Arauz will be 18 on August 3rd.

LHP Oberholtzer split 2015 between Triple A Fresno and the Astros. He was 7-4, 3.86 ERA, 52 K, 1.19 WHIP, .257 BAA in 70.0 IP over 12 games at Fresno and 2-2, 4.46 ERA, 27 K, 1.59 WHIP, .293 BAA in 38.1 IP over 8 games with the Astros. Over four MLB seasons with the Phillies and Astros he is 13-20, 4.18 ERA, 186 K, 1.38 WHIP, .283 BAA in 275.2 IP over 55 games with 42 GS. He was originally drafted by the Braves in the eighth round in 2008. Oberholtzer will be 27 on July 1st.

RHP Arauz pitched in 2015 at Class A Tri-City where he was 0-5, 5.75 ERA, 52 K, 1.74 WHIP, .329 BAA in 51.2 IP over 15 games with 10 GS. He originally signed with the Astros in 2011 as an amateur free agent out of Panama. Arauz will be 22 on May 29. No indication related to Jonathan.

RHP Appel split 2015 between Double A Corpus Christi and Triple A Fresno. He was 5-1, 4.26 ERA, 49 K, 1.44 WHIP, .279 BAA in 63.1 IP over 13 games at Corpus Christi and 5-2, 4.48 ERA, 61 K, 1.39 WHIP, .255 BAA in 68.1 IP over 12 games at Fresno. He was originally drafted by the Astros with the first overall pick in 2013. Appel will be 25 on July 15.

RHP Eshelman split 2015 between Rookie Gulf Coast and Class A Quad Cities. He was 0-1, 4.50 ERA, 3 K, 1.25 WHIP, .200 BAA in 4.0 IP over 2 games at Gulf Coast and 0-0, 4.26 ERA, 5 K, 1.89 WHIP, .346 BAA in 6.1 IP over 2 games at Quad Cities. He was originally drafted by the Astros in the second round in 2015. Eshelman will be 22 on June 20.

RHP Velasquez split 2015 between Corpus Christi and the Astros. He was 4-0, 1.91 ERA, 45 K, 1.00 WHIP, .175 BAA in 33.0 IP over 9 games with 5 GS at Corpus Christi and 1-1, 4.37 ERA, 58 K, 1.28 WHIP, .240 BAA in 55.2 IP over 19 games with 7 GS with the Astros. He was originally drafted by the Astros in the second round in 2010. Velasquez will be 24 on June 7th.
