2014 Rule 5 Draft Triple A Phase part 2

After the Major League phase of the Rule 5 draft there is also a minor league draft. One part is the Triple A phase where teams have the option to draft players from Double A level teams or lower to play for their Triple A teams. The cost is $12,000 for each player

The St Louis Cardinals selected RHP Tyler Waldron from the Pittsburgh Pirates. He split 2014 between Class A Advanced Bradenton, Double A Altoona and Triple A Indianapolis. He was 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 10 K, 0.41 WHIP, 2 SV, .100 BAA in 9.2 IP over 6 games at Bradenton, 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 3 K, 0.00 WHIP, .000 BAA in 1.0 IP in 1 game at Altoona and 2-3, 3.79 ERA, 33 K, 1.31 WHIP, .265 BAA in 40.1 IP over 16 games at Indiananpolis. He was originally drafted by the Pirates in the fifth round in 2010. Waladron will be 26 on May 1st.

The Los Angeles Dodgers selected outfielder Peter Lavin from the Philadelphia Phillies. He split 2014 between Class A Advanced Clearwater and Double A Reading. He hit .292/.344/.450 with 6 HR, 18 RBI, 27 R, 5 SB in 54 games at Clearwater and .283/.322/.434 with 5 HR, 31 RBI, 40 R, 6 SB in 74 games at Reading. He was originally drafted by the Phillies in the 20th round in 2011. Lavin will be 27 on December 27.

The Baltimore Orioles selected outfielder Sean Halton from the Milwaukee Brewers. He played in 2014 at Triple A Nashville. He hit .293/.342/.435 with 8 HR, 63 RBI, 63 R, 0 SB in 122 games. He was originally drafted by the Brewers in the 13th round in 2009. Halton will be 28 on June 7th.

The Los Angeles Angels selected 3B\SS\2B Chris Curley from the Chicago White Sox. He played in 2014 at Double A Birmingham. He hit .286/.328/.393 with 5 HR, 53 RBI, 64 R, 8 SB in 131 games. He originally signed with the Braves as a non-drafted free agent in 2009. Curley will be 28 on August 25.

The Texas Rangers selected shortstop Hiram Martinez from the Miami Marlins. He split 2014 between Class A Batavia and Class A Greensboro. He hit .235/.290/.259 with 0 HR, 9 RBI, 9 R, 0 SB in 28 games at Batavia and .182/.250/.182 with 0 HR, 0 RBI, 1 R, 0 SB in 3 games at Greensboro. He originally signed with the Athletics in 2010 as an international free agent out of Mexico and was traded to the Marlins in January 2014. Martinez will be 23 on September 30.

The Cincinnati Reds selected RHP Euclides Leyer from the Chicago White Sox. He pitched in 2014 at Class A Advanced Winston-Salem. He was 1-3, 4.53 ERA, 50 K, 1.51 WHIP, 3 SV, .261 BAA in 55.2 IP over 34 games. He originally signed with the White Sox in 2010 as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic. Leyer will be 24 on December 28.

The Miami Marlins selected first baseman Harold Riggins from the Cincinnati Reds. He split 2014 between Double A Tulsa of the Rockies and Class A Advanced Bakersfield of the Reds. He hit .263/.351/.447 with 7 HR, 25 RBI, 20 R, 2 SB in 58 games at Tulsa and .232/.314/.384 with 3 HR, 12 RBI, 12 R, 2 SB in 35 games at Bakersfield. He was originally drafted by the Rockies in the seventh round in 2011 and was traded to the Reds in July 2014. Riggins will be 25 on March 6th.

The Tampa Bay Rays selected RHP Michael "Mikey" O'Brien from the Baltimore Orioles. He had been a Rule 5 draft selection by the Cincinnati Reds in 2013 and pitched in 2014 at Class A Advanced Bakersfield, Double A Pensacola and Triple A Louisville. He was 1-0, 6.23 ERA, 13 K, 1.56 WHIP, .319 BAA in 17.1 IP over 3 games at Bakersfield, 3-3, 3.80 ERA, 54 K, 1.37 WHIP, .250 BAA in 66.1 IP over 19 games at Pensacola and 0-2, 4.65 ERA, 22 K, 1.26 WHIP, .248 BAA in 31.0 IP over 7 games at Louisville. He was originally drafted by the Yankees in the ninth round in 2008 and after spending 2014 in the Reds organization he signed a minor league contract with the Orioles in November. The San Francisco Giants selected outfielder Brett Jackson from the Arizona Diamondbacks. He split 2014 between Triple A Iowa of the Cubs, Triple A Reno and the Diamondbacks. He hit .210/.298/.348 with 5 HR, 20 RBI, 23 R, 4 SB in 81 games at Iowa. .188/.316/.375 with 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 R, 1 SB in 11 games at Reno and .000/.200/.000 with 0 HR, 0 RBI, 0 R, 0 SB in 7 games with the Diamondbacks. He was originally drafted by the Cubs with the 31st pick of the first round in 2009 and traded to the Diamondbacks in August 2014. Jackson will be 27 on August 2nd.

The Los Angeles Dodgers selected RHP Alexander Santana from the Baltimore Orioles. He split 2014 between Class A Aberdeen, Class A Delmarva and Double A Bowie. The Los Angeles Dodgers selected RHP Randy Fontanez from the New York Mets. He split 2014 between Class A Advanced St Lucie and Double Binghamton. He was originally drafted by the Brewers with the 39th pick of the first round in 2009. Davis will be 27 on June 29.

The Los Angeles Dodgers selected shortstop Nathan Samson from the Arizona Diamondbacks. He split 2014 between Independent Sioux City and Double A Mobile. He hit .335/.401/.457 with 2 HR, 23 RBI, 26 R, 9 SB in 43 games at Sioux City and .274/.363/.444 with 4 HR, 9 RBI, 20 R, 5 SB in 46 games at Mobile. He was originally drafted by the Cubs in the 34th round in 2006. Samson will be 28 on August 19.

The Arizona Diamondbacks selected RHP Timothy Crabbe from the Cincinnati Reds. He pitched in 2014 at Triple A Louisville. He was 5-7, 4.13 ERA, 60 K, 1.51 WHIP, 2 SV, .281 BAA in 93.2 IP over 30 games. He was originally drafted by the Reds in the 14th round in 2009. Crabbe will be 27 on February 20.

The Colorado Rockies selected RHP Kyle Simon from the Philadelphia Phillies. He split 2014 between Double A Reading and Triple A Lehigh Valley. He was 5-2, 2.64 ERA, 33 K, 1.13 WHIP, 3 SV, .259 BAA in 61.1 IP over 36 games and 0-2, 9.42 ERA, 8 K, 2.02 WHIP, .271 BAA in 14.1 IP over 10 games at Lehigh Valley. He was originally drafted by the Orioles in the fourth round in 2011 and was traded to the Phillies in 2012. Simon will be 25 on August 18.

The Texas Rangers selected 1B\OF Roderick "Rock" Shoulders from the Chicago Cubs. He played in 2014 at Class A Advanced Daytona. He hit .223/.341/.397 with 12 HR, 42 RBI, 46 R, 1 SB in 91 games. He was originally drafted by the Cubs in the 25th round in 2011. Shoulders will be 24 on September 26.

The Houston Astros selected catcher Luis Flores from the Chicago Cubs. He split 2014 between Double A Tennessee and Triple A Iowa. The Chicago White Sox selected RHP Peter Tago from the Colorado Rockies. He pitched in 2014 at Class A Advanced Modesto. He was 0-6, 6.00 ERA, 48 K, 1.85 WHIP, .281 BAA in 60.0 IP over 43 games. He was originally drafted by the Rockies with the 47th pick of the first round in 2010. Tago will be 23 on July 5th.

The Chicago Cubs selected OF\1B Ariel Ovando from the Houston Astros. He played in 2014 at Class A Tri City. He hit .237/.287/.289 with 1 HR, 14 RBI, 17 R, 0 SB in 58 games. He was 11-6, 3.50 ERA, 82 K, 1.32 WHIP, 2 SV, .285 BAA in 136.1 IP over 25 games. He was originally drafted by the Twins in the 42nd round in 2011. Tomshaw will be 26 on December 17.

The San Diego Padres selected shortstop Juan Gamboa from the New York Mets. He played in 2014 for the Diablos Rojos del Mexico in Mexico City after play in 2013 for Class A Brooklyn. He hit .306/.386/.472 with 7 HR, 50 RBI, 54 R, 6 SB in 95 games in Mexico. He originally signed with the Mets in 2010 as an international free agent out of Mexico. Gamboa will be 24 on April 18.

The Tampa Bay Rays selected OF/RHP Luis Urena from the Pittsburgh Pirates. He pitched in 2014 at Class A Jamestown after transitioning from the outfield. He was 2-2, 5.25 ERA, 11 K, 1.38 WHIP, 2 SV, .293 BAA in 24.0 IP over 17 games. He originally signed with the Pirates in 2009 as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic. Urena will be 23 on August 21.

The Atlanta Braves selected catcher Steven Rodriguez from the Arizona Diamondbacks. He split 2014 between Class A Advanced Visalia and Double A Mobile. The Cleveland Indians selected RHP Delvi Francisco from the Philadelphia Phillies. He split 2014 between Class A Williamsport and Class A Lakewood. He was 2-0, 5.14 ERA, 8 K, 1.71 WHIP, .260 BAA in 14.0 IP over 8 games at Williamsport and 1-3, 8.29 ERA, 39 K, 1.68 WHIP, 2 SV, .269 BAA in 38.0 IP over 22 games at Lakewood. The Detroit Tigers selected RHP Jheyson Manzueta from the Miami Marlins. He split 2014 between Class A Advanced Jupiter and Double A Jacksonville. He was 1-0, 4.15 ERA, 9 K, 1.23 WHIP, .265 BAA in 13.0 IP over 8 games at Jupiter and 4-2, 4.44 ERA, 28 K, 1.50 WHIP, 2 SV, .271 BAA in 46.2 IP over 29 games at Jacksonville. He originally signed with the Marlins in 2007 as an international free agent out of the Dominican Republic. Manzueta turned 25 on December 5th.

2014 Rule 5 Draft

The Rule 5 draft took place today at the annual winter meeting of the general managers. The eligible pool of players are not on the 40 man roster of a team and were signed at the age of 19 and have been in the organization for four years or were signed at the age of 18 or younger and have been in the organization for five years. Each drafted player costs $50,000 and must remain on the 25 man roster of the drafting team the entire season or be offered back to the original team at half price. Like the regular draft the order starts with the team with the worst record and proceeds to the team with the best. It is the hope of each team that they land the next Josh Hamilton or Johan Santana both former rule 5 draftees.

The Arizona Diamondbacks started off the draft by selecting catcher Oscar Hernandez from the Tampa Bay Rays. He played in 2014 at Class A Bowling Green. He hit .249/.301/.401 with 9 HR, 63 RBI, 43 R, 3 SB in 94 games while throwing out 41% of attempted base thefts. He originally signed with the Rays in 2010 as an amateur free agent out of Venezuela. Hernandez will be 22 on July 9th.

The Colorado Rockies selected 1B\3B\OF Mark Canha from the Miami Marlins. He played in 2014 at Triple A New Orleans. He hit .303/.384/.505 with 20 HR, 82 RBI, 83 R, 3 SB in 127 games. He was originally drafted by the Marlins in the seventh round in 2010. Canha will be 26 on February 15.

The Texas Rangers selected outfielder Delino Deshields Jr from the Houston Astros. He played in 2014 at Double A Corpus Christi. He hit .236/.346/.360 with 11 HR, 57 RBI, 75 R, 54 SB in 114 games. He was originally drafted by the Astros with the eighth pick of the first round in 2010. DeShields will be 23 on August 16.

The Houston Astros selected RHP Jason Garcia from the Boston Red Sox. He split 2014 between Class A Lowell and Class A Greenville. He was 1-1, 3.48 ERA, 22 K, 1.26 WHIP, .238 BAA in 20.2 IP over 5 games at Lowell and 2-1, 3.79 ERA, 37 K, 1.35 WHIP, .242 BAA in 35.2 IP over 9 games at Greenville. He was originally drafted by the Red Sox in the 17th round in 2010. Garcia turned 22 on November 21.

The Minnesota Twins selected RHP J.R. Graham from the Atlanta Braves. He pitched in 2014 at Double A Mississippi. He was 1-5, 5.55 ERA, 50 K, 1.47 WHIP, .289 BAA in 71.1 IP over 27 games. He was originally drafted by the Braves in the fourth round in 2011. Graham will be 25 on January 14.

The Boston Red Sox selected RHP Jandel Gustave from the Houston Astros. He pitched in 2014 at Class A Quad Cities. He was 5-5, 5.01 ERA, 82 K, 1.56 WHIP, .289 BAA in 79.0 IP over 23 games. He originally signed with the Astros in 2010 as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic. Gustavo will be 23 on October 12. After the draft he was traded to the Kansas City Royals.

The Chicago Cubs selected shortstop Taylor Featherston from the Colorado Rockies. He played in 2014 at Double A Tulsa. He hit .260/.322/.439 with 16 HR, 57 RBI, 69 R, 14 SB in 127 games. He was originally drafted by the Rockies in the fifth round in 2011. Featherston will be 26 on October 8th. 

The Philadelphia Phillies selected second baseman David Odubel Herrera from the Texas Rangers. He split 2014 between Class A Advanced Myrtle Beach and Double A Frisco. He hit .297/.412/.342 with 0 HR, 11 RBI, 26 R, 9 SB in 29 games at Myrtle Beach and .321/.373/.402 with 2 HR, 48 RBI, 47 R, 12 SB in 96 games at Frisco. He originally signed with the Rangers in 2008 as an amateur free agent out of Venezuela. Herrera will be 23 on December 29.

The Miami Marlins selected LHP Andrew McKirahan from the Chicago Cubs. He split 2014 between Class A Advanced Daytona and Double A Tennessee. He was 2-1, 0.99 ERA, 33 K, 1.02 WHIP, 8 SV, .213 BAA in 36.1 IP over 23 games at Daytona and 0-3, 3.45 ERA, 24 K, 1.19 WHIP, 2 SV, .257 BAA in 28.2 IP over 21 games at Tennessee. He was originally drafted by the Cubs in the 21st round in 2011. McKirahan will be 25 on February 8th.

The New York Mets selected LHP Sean Gilmartin from the Minnesota Twins. He split 2014 between Double A New Britain and Triple A Rochester. He was 7-3, 3.12 ERA, 74 K, 1.28 WHIP, .275 BAA in 72.0 IP over 12 games at New Britain and 2-4, 4.28 ERA, 59 K, 1.32 WHIP, .250 BAA in 73.2 IP over 14 games at Rochester. He was originally drafted by the Braves with the 28th pick of the first round in 2011 and was traded to the Twins in 2013. Gilmartin will be 25 on May 8th.

The Atlanta Braves selected RHP Daniel Winkler from the Colorado Rockies. He pitched at Double A Tulsa before his season ended after Tommy John surgery. He was 5-2, 1.41 ERA, 71 K, 0.71 WHIP, .139 BAA in 70.0 IP over 12 games. He was originally drafted by the Rockies in the 20th round in 2011. Winkler will be 25 on February 2nd.

The Seattle Mariners selected LHP David Rollins from the Houston Astros. He pitched in 2014 at Double A Tulsa. He was 3-4, 3.81 ERA, 77 K, 1.23 WHIP, 1 SV, .243 BAA in 78.0 IP over 27 games. He was originally drafted by the Blue Jays in the 24th round in 2011 and was traded to the Astros in 2012. Rollins will be 25 on December 21. 

The Baltimore Orioles selected RHP Logan Verrett from the New York Mets. He pitched in 2014 at Triple A Las Vegas. He was 11-5, 4.33 ERA, 119 K, 1.37 WHIP, .291 BAA in 162.0 IP over 28 games. He was originally drafted by the Mets in the third round in 2011. Verrett will be 25 on June 19.

The Philadelphia Phillies selected RHP Andrew Oliver from the Pittsburgh Pirates. He pitched in 2014 at Triple A Indianapolis. He was 3-4, 2.53 ERA, 85 K, 1.28 WHIP, 13 SV, .167 BAA in 64.0 IP over 48 games. He was originally drafted by the Tigers in the second round in 2009 and was traded to the Pirates in 2012. Oliver turned 27 on December 3rd.
