sixth place 2013

The regular season is now over for 2013 and that also concludes another year for fantasy baseball. I stumbled and fell flat on my face to start the season and was in last or 12th place after the first month. I just set my eyes on the middle of the pack and adjusted my approach.

I figured I would attack a category and decided to go after saves. At the time I had Kimbrel of the Braves and some teams were in transition so I went after Uehara of the Red Sox and Benoit of the Tigers. That was a fortunate situation to land the new closers to a couple top teams. A few weeks later I picked up Wilhelmsen of the Mariners and got a few weeks worth of saves before he imploded and I tossed him back. Then I grabbed Henderson of the Brewers and he helped to continue pad my save total. A positive benefit was that they were helping my ERA and WHIP totals also.

I had built up a double digit lead in saves and the first week of September I decided to attack from another direction. I unloaded all my closers by trading Kimbrel and dropping the others except Uehara and picked up starting pitchers with good ERA and WHIP in an attempt to boost my win totals. For the last three weeks of the season I ran eight starters out there along with Uehara. Some games went my way and I was gaining ground.

To bolster my offense the last week of August I made the decision to pick up Yan Gomes of the Indians to pick up my flailing catching corps and dropped the struggling C C Sabathia. Then Paul Goldschmidt, Alex Gordon, Dayan Viciedo, Wilson Ramos and even Chris Carter all had a good run. The offensive catagories started to come off life support and my numbers started to tick up. With two weeks left in the season I actually touched fourth place and stayed there for almost a week.

But my team peaked a week early and fizzled the last week. I took it as a bad omen the Sunday before the last week that I had five starters and only one picked up a win. Several players slumped and went into power outages the last week. I had left Uehara alone on the closer island to ward the others off with a stick and he didn't have one save the last week and I ended up tied in the category.

I had made my run and came up short. I learned some things which I hope to apply in future seasons. Time to rest up and spring training will be here before we know it.

The RHP split 2013 between Class A Advanced Jupiter, Double A Jacksonville and the Marlins. He was 1-0, 2.70 ERA, 2 K, 1.00 WHIP in 10.0 IP over 2 games at Jupiter, was 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 13 K, 0.35 WHIP in 14.1 IP over 2 games at Jacksonville and was 4-6, 3.94 ERA, 53 K, 1.24 WHIP in 93.2 IP over 16 games with the Marlins. Jason Heyward 5 for 5 vs Phillies 092613

Jason Heyward of the Atlanta Braves was 5 for 5 in a 7-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on September 26, 2013. For the game he was 5 for 5 with three doubles, a home run, one RBI and two runs while playing center field and leading off. This season he has hit .258/.349/.435 with 14 HR, 38 RBI, 65 R, 2 SB in 101 games. Over his four season MLB career he was hit .258/.350/.440 with 72 HR, 233 RBI, 289 R, 43 SB in 528 games. He was originally drafted by the Braves with the 14th pick of the first round in 2007. Heyward turned 24 on August 9th.

Rangers and Indians dominate Astros and White Sox

The Texas Rangers dominated the Houston Astros 17 games to 2 this season. The Cleveland Indians did the same to the Chicago White Sox. Astros and White Sox players might be in off season counselling over this one. The sight of a Rangers jersey may cause an Astro or two to twitch. Red, white and navy blue may be banned in the south side of Chicago.

The Rangers were 8-1 at home and 9-1 on the road against the Astros. They hit .283/.359/.482 with 25 HR, 117 RBI, 126 R, 16 SB in those 19 games. Other teams hit for higher average but the Rangers put up higher numbers in all the other stats. Division foes Oakland, Seattle and Los Angeles all matched the 19 games against. The Rangers pitching staff posted a 3.49 ERA, 208 K, 1.06 WHIP while allowing a .210 average. Those ranked tenth, first, fourth and third among the 20 teams that played the Astros in 2013.

The Indians were also 8-1 at home and 9-1 on the road against the White Sox. They hit .282/.358/.462 with 25 HR, 113 RBI, 118 R, 18 SB in those 19 games. Only three other teams hit for higher average and they toed or lead all the other stats outright. Division foes Detroit and Minnesota also have played 19 while Kansas City is finishing the season with four more against the White Sox. The Indians pitching staff posted a 2.74 ERA, 152 K, 1.19 WHIP while allowing a .242 average against. Those ranked sixth, first, ninth and ninth among the 20 teams that played the White Sox in 2013.

The Astros and White Sox have been regulars this season in my weekly Ghost of 1962 series which spot lights how the worst MLB teams are doing. Take the White Sox out of their schedule and the Indians are 71-68. Remove the Astros from the Rangers schedule and they are 70-69. It shows how having a weaker division foe can help pad the record of a team barely above average and keep them in the play off race.

Chasing 50-50 092213

Last season we followed Matt Kemp of the Dodgers in his self proclaimed attempt to hit 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases. The 2013 season is under way and we are going to follow Kemp's efforts to see if he can make another run. I'm also adding Mike Trout of the Angels and Carlos Gonzalez into the mix because I think they also have the speed\power combo capable of reaching the mark some day. As of May 9 I added Starling Marte of the Pirates, Carlos Gomez of the Brewers and Hunter Pence of the Giants to the chase based on their performance. As of May 23 Andrew McCutchen of the Pirates and Jean Segura of the Brewers enter the mix. On September 7 I'm adding Paul Goldschmidt of the Diamondbacks, Adam Jones of the Orioles, Alfonso Soriano of the Cubs\Yankees and Will Venable of the Padres to recognize their efforts. This is week 25 of the chase.
