Here is my week 12 installment of College Spotlight for 2013. This week I am looking at Kris Bryant of San Diego and Carlos Rondon of North Carolina State. Both are leading the power categories this week.
Junior 3B/1B Kris Bryant is out of Bonanza High School in Las Vegas, NV. Bryant was a highly touted player at Bonanza where he earned selection to the Baseball America and USA Today All American teams and was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 18th round in 2010. Bryant leads the nation with 25 home runs and holds an impressive lead of seven over Ryan Kinsella of Elon. This season he is hitting .333/.506/.851 with 25 HR, 51 RBI, 61 R, 7 SB in 49 games. Last season as a Sophomore he hit .366/.483/.671 with 14 HR, 57 RBI, 59 R, 9 SB in 57 games. Bryant is expected to go in the top five in the MLB draft in June.
Sophomore LHP Carlos Rondon is out of Holly Springs High School in Holly Springs, NC. He leads the nation in strikeouts with 114. What really stands out is he has done it in far fewer innings than his the closest as he has pitched 74.0 IP while Kyle McGowan of Savannah St has 109 in 95.1 IP and Mark Appel of Stanford has 106 in 86.1 IP. This season Rondon is 6-2, 4.14 ERA, 114 K, 1.17 WHIP in 74.0 IP over 12 games. One telling stat as to why Rondon hasn't pitched as many innings is he has given up 31 walks while McGowan has 17 and Appel has 15. He starting his college career as a dominate force last season as a freshman when he was 9-0, 1.57 ERA, 135 K, 0.98 WHIP in 114.2 IP over 17 games and finished tied for third in total strikeouts. Control will be the big issue as he continues to develop and remains in the spotlight his junior season.
