Here is my week 14 installment of College Spotlight for 2013. It is the final one this year with the regular season now over for college. This week I am looking at Mike Tauchman of Bradley and David Berg of UCLA.
Senior outfielder Mike Tauchman is out of William Fremd High School in Palatine, IL. The lefty led all of Division I in hitting as he finished with a .425 average. This season he hit .425/.513/.597 with 2 HR, 41 RBI, 52 R, 28 SB in 49 games. His performance was one of the few bright spots for the Braves who struggled mightly with a 2-19 Missouri Valley Conference record and were 17-32 over all. Last season as a junior he hit .305/.398/.402 with 1 HR, 23 RBI, 27 R, 5 SB in 43 games. It will be interesting to see who takes a chance on him in the MLB draft in a couple weeks.
Sophomore RHP David Berg is out of Bishop Amat High School in Covina, CA. The relief pitcher led Division I in ERA with the impressively low 0.58. For the season he was 6-0, 0.58 ERA, 62 K, 0.76 WHIP, 17 SV in 62.0 IP over 39 games. He is also in the top ten in saves for a Bruins team in a rebuilding year. Last season as a freshman he showed his dominance when he was 5-3, 1.46 ERA, 63 K, 0.80 WHIP, 1 SV in 74.0 IP over 50 games. His continued improvement will bode well for UCLA as they try to bounce back to championship form next season.
