Here is my week 11 installment of College Spotlight for 2013. This week I am looking at Jay Knight of Mount St Mary and Clay Smith of St Louis. The spotlight shines on them due to a stellar performance in the last week.
Junior outfielder Jay Knight is out of Linganore High School in Frederick, MD. On Saturday he was a perfect 5 for 5 in a 17-0 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson. Batting lead off he was 5 for 5 with a home run, one RBI, four runs, one walk and two steals while playing right field. For the season he is hitting .324/.401/.449 with 2 HR, 13 RBI, 30 R, 24 SB in 36 games. It is major improvement from from his sophomore season when he hit .255/.311/.364 with 2 HR, 16 RBI, 13 R, 8 SB in 43 games.
Junior RHP Clay Smith is out of Park Hill High School in Kansas City, MO. Smith pitched a two hit shut out in a 2-0 win over Richmond on the road. His line for the game was 9.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 8 K in 118 pitches. For the season he is 6-2, 3.53 ERA, 52 K, 1.26 WHIP in 63.2 IP over 11 games. As a sophomore last season he was 7-2, 2.63 ERA, 65 K, 1.10 WHIP in 96.0 IP over 15 games.
